Love Is Here to Stay was the last musical composition George Gershwin completed before his death on July 11, 1937. Ira Gershwin wrote the lyrics after George's death as a tribute to his brother. Although George had not written a verse for the song, he did have an idea for it that both Ira and pianist Oscar Levant had heard before his death. When a verse was needed, Ira and Levant recalled what George had in mind.

WWJD What Would Jesus Do WWJD If He was you

1. The death and sin are gone, I’m free like flying birds
To appreciate your saving grace, I ask myself these words

2. Whatever is to come, and what is here to stay
I face with dignity because, I follow in your way

3. My Lord throughout this day, I’ll try to follow you
It may not be an easy task, so please come help me too

4. And let me dedicate, each new day coming through
To you my friends with love and peace, as Jesus liked to do.

At the end of the long recording session, Crosby decided to sing only a single chorus of the song in the middle of an orchestral version instead of the full ballad treatment used in the film. This led to a long argument between the singer and producer Jack Kapp. Eventually Crosby prevailed.

Always On My Mind did not see completion until late 1971. Songwriter-guitarist Wayne Carson had about two verses done, with the working title You Were Always On My Mind. He had been occupied in Memphis on a project that required him to stay ten days longer, and he phoned his wife in Springfield, Missouri, to apologize for the delay. She was angry, and he replied: Well, I know I’ve been gone a lot, but I’ve been thinking about you all the time. His words struck him as potential song material, and he quickly ended the call so he could capture the idea on paper.
