Thanks, John.  This is the Nave and Marine Hymn. The Navy Hymn, also known as “Eternal Father, Strong to Saveâ€, holds a special place in the hearts of seafaring men and women, particularly in the American Navy and the royal navies of the British Commonwealth. In1879: Rear Admiral Charles Jackson Train, a Naval Academy graduate, was stationed at the Academy in charge of the Midshipman Choir. He initiated the practice of concluding each Sunday’s Divine Services with the singing of the first verse of this hymn. Thus, it became a cherished tradition at the Naval Academy and eventually throughout the entire Navy.

It was written in Hollywood, California during a heat wave as Cahn and Styne imagined cooler conditions. Despite the lyrics making no mention of any holiday, the song has come to be regarded as a Christmas song worldwide due to its winter theme, being played on radio stations during the Christmas and holiday season, and having often been covered by various artists on Christmas-themed albums.

However, instead of 32 bars, it has 64, plus an 8-bar tag. The tag is often dropped when the song is performed. The tune, like many of Porter's, shifts between a major and minor feeling. The A section is in the key of B-flat minor before modulating to B-flat major and back. When the song came out in 1930, a newspaper labelled it as 'in bad taste'; radio stations avoided broadcasting it. Today it is a jazz standard.
