Once in Royal David’s City is a Christmas carol with words by Cecil Frances Alexander (nee Humphreys) and music by Henry John Gauntlett.
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at the King's College Chapel Cambridge has begun its Christmas Eve service of this carol, since 1919, as the Processional hymn. According to tradition, the soloist of this carol is chosen on the day of the performance. It was the first recoding that the King's College Choir made for EMI in 1948.
This listing is designed for higher-register, treble-clef instruments (such as violin, flute, oboe, saxophones, etc.) and can be used as either a lead sheet or a solo part (with or without accompaniment – accompaniment not provided). It includes an optional, virtuosic variation of the melody, ideal for solo performances. This version is in G major (written pitch).
