David Warin Solomons #861345. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1268814). This is a instrumental duo based on a song that I composed just before my umpteenth appearance at the New Troubadour Club at Follies Wine Bar Manchester back in 1991.Writer's block was threatening to take over, so I wrote about writer's block, in a sort of mock blues style...The original words are:Woke up Sunday mornin' and notes went spinnin' round. (rpt)What can I sing for the New Troubadours - Troubadours?Woke up wake up woke up wake up.What can I sing for the New Troubadours?Oh! I just godda sing the Blues the New Troubadour Blues'cos there's nothing they like better than the Blues.I got those New Troubadour Blues.'cos there's not a single chord these Blues refuse;not a single note I cannot choose. Then it was Monday evenin' with no more words in mind;notes they still kept spinnin'but no cause could they find. What can I sing for the New Troubadours? So, here's a sad Blues with a walkin' bass.it'll walk all over you, leavin' muddy footprintsSo here's a sad Blues, Blues, BluesSo here is a walkin' bass.oh! why am I walkin'with a muddy walkin' basswaitin' for words to come?Blues Blues Blues Blues Blues Blueswaitin' for words to comeOh those sad BluesI got those New Troubadour Blues.New Troubadour Blues 'cos there's not a single chord these Blues refuse! It is performed here byBalázs Rumy clarinetAndrás Csáki guitar.

Intrumental version of my song inspired by this poem by Mary Holtby (by way of a parody on TS Eliot's Macavity the mystery cat).McQuiddity is a naughty and very funny dog:McQuiddity, McQuiddity, there's no-one like McQuiddityHis errors are so vulgar and so coarse in their solidityYou may walk along the pavementYou may step upon the stairIt's odorously evident McQuiddity's been thereMcQuiddity, McQuiddity, there's no-one like McQuiddityHe doesn't know the meaning of decorum or timidityHe barks at friends and neighboursand will give the boss a scareBut when burglars cart the silver off, he doesn't turn a hairIf you stagger through a doorwayWith an overloaded trayYou can bet that old McQuiddity's lying in the wayIf the chocolates vanish overnightor gloves vacate a chairThen it's absolutely certain that McQuiddity's been there.McQuiddity, McQuiddity, there's no-one like McQuiddityHe's totally unrivalled in the depth of his stupidityHis canine infelicities no cretin could surpassHe's undisputed champion of the disobedience classMcQuiddity!

[I used to play] but for my sins mihi deridere [they hold me in derision] with right good cause incipio flere [I start to weep] Now what shall I say meis parentibus, [to my parents] because I lay with quidam clericus [some man of the cloth] They will beat me cum virgis et fustibus [with sticks and clubs] and me sore chaste coram omnibus [in front of everybody] With the said child quid faciam [what shall I do] shall I it keep vel interficiam [or kill it] If I slay it quo loco fugiam [where shall I flee to] I shall lose God et vitam eternam [and eternal life].

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Guitar,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.576046 Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 9 pages. David Warin Solomons #2030183. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576046). Three words too many (say it in words and you cheat, you cheat the indefinable). This was originally a song, which I wrote back in my tender years (also available on this site for alto and guitar), but it also works equally well as an instrumental piece. I have therefore provided versions on this site for guitar with: voice flute alto saxophone French horn English horn (cor anglais) clarinet oboe violin. After a gentle introductory major chord arpeggio, the tension of the piece comes into play from the third bar where the melody line holds and repeats an augmented 4th suspension above the guitar. This note then returns as the arpeggio chords change underneath to reveal it as a minor third of a chord related by three degrees of separation from the original - C major to E flat minor. The harmonies and melody continue to sway in their relations in a curious and yet logical progression. I have provided score and parts and also a separate version of the guitar part which provides chord names and fretboard symbols; this would make it useful for educational purposes. The sound sample is an electronic preview.

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Guitar,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.576894 Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 3 pages. David Warin Solomons #496549. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576894). Instrumental arrangement of my setting of four poems by Carol Batton Carol Batton is a Manchester based poet. Her writing deals with a wide range of subjects including environmental issues and the difficult topic of mental illness. Her poetry can be sad, witty, angry and above all full of her strength of spirit. In fact, she has been described as 'the poet laureate of the survivors movement'. The poems are as follows: The clocks move tonight. Nothing moves but the clocks. The Universe stays the same. Then why does darkness drag in early? Why the days go damp and dreary? Like an unkind remark turning beauty to hurt, the wind ransacks the pink blossom. A new tree starting out managed the first inch up and the first inch down; it was not to be the minority who make maturity. A leaf clings with all it has to the tree: Falling is painless.

A sequence for clarinet and guitar based on three Viennese songs from the 1840s and 1850sinterspersed with three original yodels. The melodies of the old songs, originally taken from the book Wiener Lieder und Tänze and then expanded, are:1. O Theures Erbsien - a moralistic song about avoiding crime and thus prison (it appears that the old Viennese prison was called Erbsien after the principal diet of the prisoners there: Erbsen = peas)2. Servicerl A celebration of drinking and courting.3. Mein Nachbarin und I A song about getting on well with the widow next door....The original yodels were initially inspired by some of the sections marked Jodel in the same book.It is performed here byBalázs Rumy clarinetAndrás Csáki guitar.

Small Ensemble Clarinet,Guitar - Digital Download SKU: A0.576904 Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Contemporary,Folk,World. Score and parts. 14 pages. David Warin Solomons #506803. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576904). Instrumental arrangement of my classical-folk crossover setting of Prévert's poem Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau (To paint the portrait of a bird).  Prévert indicates that you can never capture the real essence of a bird. You can paint a cage, a tree branch for it to sing on, but you have to wait for the actual bird itself to enter your painting - only then can you sign your painting, using a feather from that bird. The music has a Dorian feel - ie with a minor third and seventh but often with a raised sixth - (in this case F#s in an otherwise A minor context). I have provided full score and separate parts and also the melody instrument part with chord names, to enable the guitarist to read along with the melody instrument player and opt for interpretations other than the notated version (eg strumming, rasgueado etc). The sound sample is an electronic preview. My live performance of the original song can be heard on youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkjYONGdicI
