The Tulip Ch’Boogie is a fun and original duet written by David McKeown for one Oboe and one Bassoon. 

The Tulip Ch’Boogie is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. Boogie originally referred to the piano style found in Southern State bars where the driving swung bass-line, often double in octaves, cut through the noise. These bass-line patterns were adapted by Big Bands in the ‘30s, and later by Jump bands like that of Louis Jordan. Later still Boogie was quickly incorporated into Rockabilly and Rock’n’Roll.

The Tulip Ch’Boogie is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo and syncopated rhythms and accidentals. With a playing-time of around one and a half minutes, The Tulip Ch’Boogie is a perfect upbeat addition to any performance program, formal or informal. Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was an influential German music critic and composer who was troubled by mental health issues for much of his life.  Schumann’s enthusiasm for music was evident at an early age but he was discouraged from pursuing this as a career and encouraged towards the law instead.  Ultimately, music won out and Schumann began studying piano with Friedrich Wieck, whose daughter Clara was later to become Schumann’s wife.  After damage to one hand affected his playing ability, Schumann turned his attention to musicology and composition.

Träumerei (Dreaming) has been described as one of the most famous piano works ever written.  It is one of a collection of short pieces, entitled Kinderscenen (Scenes from Childhood) written in 1838.  This arrangement, for double reed duo of oboe and bassoon, would make a charming addition to a recital programme.

Loch Earn is a reel written by performer, composer and music publisher Nathaniel Gow (1763 – 1831), fourth son of acclaimed Perthshire fiddler Niel Gow.  This arrangement for double reed duo of oboe and bassoon has been classed as 'intermediate' standard but, for those who would prefer to increase the difficulty, the answer is to play it faster!!

Loch Earn itself is a Scottish fresh water loch, approximately six and a half miles long, which lies within the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.  The area around the loch is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including kingfishers, osprey, red kites, red deer, mountain hare and wild goats.  Loch Earn is used extensively for fishing and assorted water-sports activities.

This is s short duet in the style of two Baroque dances for Oboe and
Bassoon. There are two movements (as in the title, each with a DC. The
forms are closely modelled on the dances of the same name.

The instrumental parts are not demanding and would suit most players quite well.
