Zoe the Zen Zombie is a spooky and original duet written by David McKeown for one Oboe and one Bassoon.

Zoe was interested in Eastern philosophy long before she became a zombie and nowadays it helps her cope with the unfortunate change of circumstances. So when all her zombie friends are out on a flesh-eating rampage, Zoe is usually at home sipping Tibetan tea and listening to George Harrison. But she does get lonely at times.

 Zoe the Zen Zombie is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. Grá, (Irish for Love), is a beautiful original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon.

This duet is inspired by the Irish sean-nós style of singing. Originally sung unaccompanied in the Irish Gaelic language, in more recent times the melodies have been adapted as instrumentals, harmonised and given accompaniment. The songs are most often about love and loss and Grá aims to capture this melancholy mood.

Grá is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Players can add their own appropriate ornaments and variations to the melody if they wish. Grá has a performance time of a little over three minutes. Hava Nagila is a Hebrew Folk tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon.

Hava Nagila was originally a Nigun melody thought to have originated in the Ukraine. In 1918 a professor and musicologist at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Abraham Zevi Idelsohn, set the tune to words adapted from Psalm 118. Hava Nagila was first performed at celebrations at the end of the Great War and quickly spread throughout the Jewish diaspora. In the fifties and sixties, performances by singers as diverse as Harry Belafonte and Bob Dylan popularised the song far beyond its original Jewish audience. Hava Nagila remains one of the best-known and loved Klezmer standards today, traditionally performed at Jewish celebrations.

The Londonderry Air is among the best loved melodies of Ireland. This beautiful version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon.

The Londonderry Air was first collected and notated in the mid-nineteenth century in County Londonderry in the North of Ireland, however, the origins of the melody remain unknown. In 1913 the English writer Frederic Weatherley set his poem Danny Boy to the melody. There are many other settings of the Londonderry Air, with various lyrics and in musical styles from orchestral to brass band to jazz, but Danny Boy remains the best known.

For many traditional Klezmer tunes, the first clues of their existence comes from bands making discs at the dawn of the recording era. In this case, Odessa Bulgar first appeared in a 1919 recording by Abe Schwartz’s Orchestra. Schwartz was born in Romania and emigrated to the USA around 1900, thereafter enjoying a long career in the music industry. Odessa Bulgar is a happy piece designed for dancing at celebrations.

Bublitschki is a Ukrainian/Jewish Folk song, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon.

Bublitschki was written in 1922 by Yakov Jadow. The title means pretzels in Russian and was inspired by the pretzel sellers by the railway station in Odessa. Jadow observed that the street-vendors were poverty-stricken and wrote the song as a lament. Initially popular in the Soviet Union, a recording by the Barry Sisters in 1939 brought this song to an international audience.

Steal Away to Jesus is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon.

The words and music of Steal Away to Jesus are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. The words have a meaning beyond the spiritual, with hidden references to the Underground Railway of the time that helped escaped slaves cross to Canada. In more recent times Steal Away to Jesus was arranged by Michael Tippett in 1944 and recorded famously by Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole.

Silver Wedding, (Die Silberne Khasene in Yiddish), is a Jewish Folk tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon.

Jewish Wedding bands, prominent in early twentieth century New York, were well placed to take advantage of the phonograph recording revolution. Accordingly, we are fortunate to have a rich record of the musical style of the time. Silver Wedding first appeared in a 1915 recording by Abe Elenkrig’s Orchestra. Elenkrig was born in Ukraine, which may point to the origins of the tune. Silver Wedding is in a Bulgar style, a happy piece designed to escort the newly-weds from the ceremony to the feast.
