Grá, (Irish for Love), is a beautiful original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon.

This duet is inspired by the Irish sean-nós style of singing. Originally sung unaccompanied in the Irish Gaelic language, in more recent times the melodies have been adapted as instrumentals, harmonised and given accompaniment. The songs are most often about love and loss and Grá aims to capture this melancholy mood.

Grá is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Players can add their own appropriate ornaments and variations to the melody if they wish. Grá has a performance time of a little over three minutes. Scott Joplin is celebrated as the United States’ first well-known black composer, making his name as a writer of piano rags. His life was a constant struggle with adversity, and Joplin died relatively young in 1917, at the dawn of the recording age. Few remembered Joplin’s music until a revival in the 1970s brought The Entertainer and others to the world’s attention. Nowadays Scott Joplin has taken his rightful place in the gallery of great American composers.

The duets included in this collection are, The Entertainer, The Maple Leaf Rag, The Easy Winners, The Elite Syncopations and The Favorite.

They have been arranged as duets for one Oboe and one Bassoon, and include all sections of the original compositions. The YouTube link showcases the clarinet version of these duets.
