Daffodil Doo-Wop is a fun and original duet written by David McKeown for one Oboe and one Bassoon.

Daffodil Doo-Wop is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets, each written in a different Rock’n’Roll style. Doo-wop reached the height of its popularity in the early ‘60s but its origins were in the African-American vocal harmony groups in East Coast cities in the ‘40s. Doo-Wop was a major influence on the soul and pop music that followed it, with groups such as the Drifters, the Four Seasons and even the Beach Boys adopting the vocal harmonies.

Daffodil Doo-Wop is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a playing-time of around two minutes, Daffodil Doo-Wop is a perfect addition to any performance program, formal or informal. Playing duets with a friend or teacher is an excellent way to improve your performance skills. Here we have an abridged version of ‘Spring’ from Vivaldi’s famous ‘The Four Seasons’ suite, arranged here for oboe and bassoon. A little challenging perhaps but instantly recognizable and enjoyable to play. Suitable for intermediate players and above - no fiendishly difficult bits - the main points to watch out for are the tempo changes at bar 28 (where the oboe slows the tempo before a slight accelerando) and bar 34 (a new tempo, slightly down on the opening one, is established). These tempo markings are not obligatory and the piece can ebb and flow rubato fashion at these points, if you wish. Also, note the rallentando at the end. Enjoy yourselves!
