The first performance was given in 1874 on the first anniversary of Manzoni's death. It was a great popular success and Verdi toured with it all over Europe. The Latin text of the Dies irae or Day of Wrath portrays the day of judgment.The Dies irae is, in itself, very lengthy, in nine sections. It has been greatly abridged to make it practical for performance by trombonists. Most trombonists take great pleasure and pride in their ability to play loud. However, to achieve the dramatic contrasts essential for this piece it is necessary to focus on extremely soft, but still beautiful, playing in the piano passages.Mr. Kempton has done a great job of bringing this soul-stiring work to life. About 8 minutes in length, this work for advanced performers is most effective having more than one person on a part.

Dr. Marcellus has dedicated his arrangement to the memory of the late Steve Witser, his former student and colleague who was Principal Trombonist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In his arrangement Marcellus has split the music into a two 3-part Trombone choirs each with two tenor Trombones and a bass Trombone. The work is separated into six sections titled: 1. Arioso: Adagio - His friends try to persuade him not to undertake the journey 2. Andante - His friends tell him of the various misfortunes that may befall him abroad 3. Brahms alludes to his admired predecessor Schubert in No. 13 with a quote from the song Der Leiermann from Die Winterreise. Ralph Sauer has lovingly arranged these for six-part Trombone Ensemble of moderate difficulty, able to be performed by just about any level group with the all parts in bass clef and in easy ranges. They can all be performed without the need of a bass trombone or f-attachment.

First performed in August 1848 in Vienna, it soon became quite popular among regimented marching soldiers. It has been remarked that its tone is more celebratory than martial; Strauss was commissioned to write the piece to commemorate Radetzky's victory at the Battle of Custoza. This fun arrangement by David Fetter has moderate range requirements, all parts are in bass clef and can be performed by moderately advanced performers.
