Maria durch ein Dornwald ging (Maria walks Among the Thorns) is a German Advent carol first found in 1850 in a collection of hymns. The theme of the thorns is a symbol of fertility and death. The rose bush with the thorns comes to life and begins to bloom during the birth of the divine child. 

This lovely song of about 3 minutes in length has been beautifully arranged for 8-part Trombone Choir by Kevin Dombrowski and is appropriate for moderate to advanced performers.

Trombone Quintet - Intermediate - Digital Download. Away in a Manger is one of the most popular Christmas carols and there are a number of musical settings of it. The most popular musical setting of it in the United States is the tune commonly known as Mueller. It was composed by James R. Murray and was first published under the name Luther's Cradle Hymn, in his collection Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses, in 1887. It was intended for use in kindergarten, school and home.

In this selection, Regis Bookshar has arranged three verses of this popular Christmas carol for a Trombone Quintet. The first verse is a traditional setting of the tune while the second verse has a more complex accompaniment. The third verse also includes a descant. Between the second and third verses, he has included a short interlude. The long-enduring hymn “It Is Well With My Soul� is presented here in an arrangement for trombone ensemble. In this creative treatment, Steve Ash explores some interesting 

jazz-inspired harmony against this familiar melody without disrespecting it at any point, which leaves us with a satisfying short ballad for trombones. 

While the melody is given as a showcase for a solid, melodic lead trombonist who is comfortable in the high register (high B-flat at the top end), the remaining parts are utilized for gently moving harmonic lines making this an accessible chart for ensembles with a broad range of skill levels and a fine exercise in ensemble blend and balance. 

This tender arrangement would be well-suited for an offertory or another short ballad on your trombone ensemble program.
