The work, originally composed for Pope Gregory, was traditionally performed at Palm Sunday Mass, but is a joy to hear any time of the year.Duration: 8'40, using the provided tempo markings. The conductor may wish to take slower tempos, following the tradition of vocal performances of this work. In that case,  a duration of 10-11 minutes is typical.  An excellent demonstration of counterpoint and harmony, Stabat Mater is an enduring classic.

Josef Anton Bruckner was a deeply religious man.  Born in Austria, his father was his first music teacher who taught him to play the organ.  It was noted that he was so dedicated to music that he often practiced up to 12 hours a day.This Ave Maria was performed during his debut as a composer and conductor in 1861.  It was later published in Vienna in 1867.Although this is a sacred motet, as an instrumental piece, it can be performed in any setting.  Scored for flute choir - 5 C, alto, and bass.  Optional parts are contrabass and cello (doubling the bass part).  This is not a difficult piece, but it requires good breath support to sustain long tones in tune at a slow tempo.Duration: 2.5 minutes.

Bottle parts are written as notes but don't need to be 'tuned', just split into 'high' and 'low' groups. The groups of bottle players can be prompted by the conductor or an ensemble member, so don't need to be able to read music.The flute parts vary in difficulty from beginner to early-intermediate. There are parts for alto and bass flutes but flute 3 mostly doubles the alto and flute 4 doubles the bass, so it can also be played with C flutes only.
