Pastoral Symphony is the 13th movement in Handel's Messiah.  This is the beginning of Scene 4 of the oratorio, The Annunciation to the Shepherds, after the birth of Jesus.  

The word pastorale in baroque music is a melody in thirds over a drone bass.  Originally called Pifa, this movement was named after the shepherd bagpipers - pifferari -  who used to play their instruments in the streets of Rome at Christmastime.  

Scored for 2 altos, bass, optional contra alto in G, and contrabass flutes.  There is an optional cello part that doubles the contrabass.

It is a descriptive exciting piece, and the intention was to make it a dramatic and mysterious in style- with a film -like storyline flowing through it. It has a calm intro going into a heavily syncopated driving 4 as the main theme punctuated by a heavy accented ostinato figure to add tension.

The middle section is calmer and more relaxed where elements of the 1st theme appear in fragmented form. The intro returns once again before returning to the main theme which has slight modifications-extra accents etc, and the piece ends with the recurring stabs heard earlier before flourishing out.
The ranges of the flutes are between one and a half octaves and 2 octaves depending on the part. Set at intermediate level but the full score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.

It runs at4 Mins 35 in length. Ideal as a showpiece, contest/festival, concert etc or an additional piece for the repertoire.
