This work consists of three short movements in irregular meters.  The contrabass part is not optional but may be played on a regular bass flute if no contra is available.  The first movement, Stomp is in 9/8, conducted in 4: (initially 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 changing to 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 halfway through) with a heavy pulse and a bluesy chord progression in E minor. The second movement, Waltz is in 3 (3 + 3 + 2) with a momentary straight 3 in the middle section. This sweet little melody in G major is a bright contrast to the aggressive first movement. The final movement, Reeling is in 5/8 (2 + 3) with a brief detour to 2/4 near the end, in E major. It is a joyous dizzy layering of twirling notes in the upper voices against a rising grounded melody in the lower voices.  Each movement is 2 ½ to 3 minutes in length. Similar to many waltzes of its day, this piece opens with an introductory melody in 4 / 4 before the main waltz theme in 3 / 4.  There are a few other melodic diversions along the way, then back to the main waltz theme.  The piece runs about 5 ½ minutes and is quite accessible. It is full of energy and has a driving beat in the low flutes. I included a transcription of the sax solo from the Crystals recording, but if you have a jazzer in your group who would like to improvise during the bridge, by all means do that instead. This piece presents an excellent opportunity to get your audience moving:  vamp the first measure and get your audience clapping the back-beats for you. This piece was originally written for vocal ensemble (Cantus I, Cantus II, Altus, Tenor I, Tenor II, Basso) and is typical of Praetorius’ flowing counterpoint and mellifluous harmonies. It would be a lovely addition to a wedding or similar ceremony, or for a quiet meditative moment in a religious service or concert program. The notes are easy, making this piece an excellent opportunity to focus on ensemble skills, such as balance and intonation. The work is only about a minute and a half in length. You might want to experiment with repeating the entire work, possibly with the top four voices (Flutes 1 & 2, alto, bass 1) up an octave. Magpie was premiered at La Scala opera house in Milan, Italy on May 31, 1817 and was an immediate success.  The overture has become a staple of the orchestral repertoire, as have many Rosssini overtures. In this arrangement, I have omitted the famous snare drum roll at the beginning, opting instead to stick with just the flute choir instruments. I also simplified the opening rhythmic figure in the interest of ease of consistency across the ensemble. Much of the orchestral piccolo part, often seen in auditions, is preserved in the piccolo part here and I have kept the piece in its original keys. The piece runs 3 ½ minutes and is quite accessible. The repeated notes have to be short and crisp and there is a bit of syncopation.
