A Christmas Greeting by Edward Elgar set for flute choir by John Gibson. Edward Elgar, well known for his Pomp and Circumstance pieces and The Enigma Variations, composed this Christmas Greeting in 1909 for 2 voices, 2 violins, and piano. The lyrics were written by his wife, Caroline. The phrase, friends in storm or calm. sets the tone of the piece. This setting is for flute 1-3 alto flute, and bass flute. It runs about 4 1/2 minutes.

Long before he became famous for the Pomp & Circumstance March we hear at graduations all over the United States, Edward Elgar was a band director at a hospital for people with mental disabilities. The Powick Lunatic Asylum held dances every Friday afternoon for its inmates as a therapeutic activity, and Elgar had to compose the dances the band played for the events. The musicians were hospital employees with a bit of musical training.  

      Elgar named his charming polkas and quadrilles after fellow musicians, fiancées, and friendly ladies of his acquaintance. He continued there from 1879-84. La Blonde was written in honor of his then-fiancee Helen Weaver.  This version was edited and arranged for a small to medium flute ensemble.

Aura Lea -- An American song from the civil war period, that became the basis of Elvis Presley's smash hit Love me tender
Plaisir D'Amour -- Written in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini, this song is as fresh today as the day it was written. Elvis adapted this song as well, in his popular Can't help falling in love with you.
Hayu Leilot -- little known outside of Israel, this breathtaking song tells the story of love and loss in the days of the first Jewish settlements in Palestine.
Salut D'Amour -- Edward Elgar was a penniless and unknown composer in 1888 when, smitten by his love for the aristocratic Caroline Alice Roberts, he wrote this haunting melody. Over her family's stern objections, she married Elgar, who went on to be Britain's leading composer of the time, knighted for his contribution to British music.

Flute Choir/Ensemble Piccolo, 2 first flutes, 2 second flutes, alto flute (or 3rd concert flute), bass flute (or alto/contra-alto flute), optional contrabass flute. Five movements: Country Dance, Burlesco, Adagio, Sarabande and Bouree. Whilst playable by six players, this works better with multiple performers on each part, and is a firm favourite with our local flute choir. The third and fourth movements are relatively easy, with slower tempi and notes not surpassing top E. About grade 5 standard. The other movements are more complicated, involving faster tempi, complicated rhythms and key changes. Flute one goes up to top C, but this is optional! About grade 7-8 standard.
