Sharla Nichols Fasko #1033845. Published by Sharla Nichols Fasko (A0.1454879). Long before he became famous for the Pomp & Circumstance March we hear at graduations all over the United States, Edward Elgar was a band director at a hospital for people with mental disabilities. The Powick Lunatic Asylum held dances every Friday afternoon for its inmates as a therapeutic activity, and Elgar had to compose the dances the band played for the events. The musicians were hospital employees with a bit of musical training. Elgar named his charming polkas and quadrilles after fellow musicians, fiancées, and friendly ladies of his acquaintance. He continued there from 1879-84. La Blonde was written in honor of his then-fiancee Helen Weaver. This version was edited and arranged for a small to medium flute ensemble.
