Flute Choir,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Flute,Bass Flute,Piccolo - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1163640

Composed by Simon Franglen. Arranged by Lisa Ochoco. Contemporary,Film/TV. 20 pages. Lisa L Ochoco #763982. Published by Lisa L Ochoco (A0.1163640).

Avatar: The Way of Water, is the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning film from 2009.  The soundtrack for the new film was written by Simon Franglen, who originally wrote 5 hours of music to cover any and all situations in the almost 3-hour movie.

The Songcord is a beautiful song that is heard twice in the film – at the beginning and at the end.  A songcord is a mnemonic device used by the Na’vi that assists them in storytelling.  In this song, Neytiri is thanking Eywa – the Great Mother - for her family.

This arrangement is scored for flute choir – piccolo with 4 C, alto, bass, and contrabass flutes.  There is an optional cello part that doubles the contrabass that can be played by any bass clef C instrument in a similar range.

One of the most important parts of this piece is what helps create the mood, which is where the part called “Shimmer†comes in.  In an interview, Simon Franglen said that an important part of the music is the feeling of light, and he achieved that by including shimmering sounds into his tunes.  The “Shimmer†part can be played by hanging a few keys (house keys, car keys, etc.) that have different pitches on short lengths of string.  Use a small metal or wooden object to lightly hit the keys to create little “dingsâ€. You can also use wind chimes, a little xylophone, bells, etc.  The idea is to create a magical mood without overpowering the music.  Play this part wherever there is a note in the measure.

Always keep the melody prominent.  The piccolo should always be played softly - at the equivalent volume of the group’s piano.  Play this slowly and freely, with a lot of rubato.

Duration: 3.75 minutes.

For Flute Choir

Cloud Images

By Phyllis Avidan Louke

Cloud Images is a programmatic work in five movements for Flute Choir dedicated to Albert Weatherly of Sankyo Flutes, USA. The inspiration for this piece came from the beauty of the cloud formations observed during a long plane flight.

Movement 1, Rising Above the Clouds, features a soaring melody played first by the bass and alto flute over an ostinato played by the flutes. The piccolo adds a countermelody which contributes to the feeling of being above the clouds. (1:30)

Movement 2, Billowing Clouds, features a melody in 7/8 time, alternating with another in 6/8 time, to convey the the shape and roundness of clouds.   (2:00)

Movement 3, Oh Look! There’s an Alligator!, is a whimsical look at the different shapes that can be found in clouds. A running bass line in the bass flute supports a jaunty melody which seems to be on the prowl to find various shapes in the clouds. Several different animal shapes are seen: a hippo, an elephant, and finally, an alligator. Vocals can also be utilized in this movement to better communicate these animal shapes to the audience. (2:20)

Movement 4, With Your Head in the Clouds, is in a light-hearted soft shoe style. The melodies describe the feeling of skipping through life, not having a care in the world. For a Lawrence Welk ending, one of the players with rests can blow bubbles during the last measure. (1:40)

Movement 5, Through a Sea of Clouds, has a dream-like quality imagining what it would be like to travel through a sea of clouds and touch their whispy softness. The bass flute is prominently featured, and later joined by the alto flute. The piccolo adds the frosting on top. (2:30)

SKU: A0.1291955

Composed by Grant Horsley. Christmas,Classical,Film/TV,Holiday,Standards. 22 pages. Grant Horsley #882562. Published by Grant Horsley (A0.1291955).

Christmas Waltz is a short gentle waltz for flute choir scored for 4 C Flutes, Alto and Bass Flute
( A version for 6 C flutes is also available)

I wanted this piece to convey the feeling of the shared warmth of having family and friends meeting over the festive season when everything is done, and now it’s time to enjoy!

Written in Concert C major the introduction begins with a bell- like Christmas chime settling into the main theme which is almost like a verse and chorus. The piece has two of these sections with a link between the two. The second section is a different treatment to the first as some of the bell like figurations of the opening are incorporated. There is also a mix of staccato and legato phrasing to give contrast. The Chorus part is repeated before a short quiet reflective ending.

The range is two octaves at most and there is nothing more complicated than an eighth note- hence it has been set in early intermediate level.

The whole piece is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.

Ideal to be added to a Christmas concert list!

It is 3 minutes 15 in length.

Price is for the full score and all parts.

From Darkness to Light is a beautiful instrumental piece in the movie that shows off the beauty of the water.  On paper, the music seems a little too simple, but the chord progressions together with the moving parts make for quite a beautiful and memorable piece.

Shadowlands:  A Journey
By Phyllis Avidan Louke, ASCAP

PROGRAM NOTES:
Shadowlands:  A Journey
is a programmatic work in three movements for Flute Choir written in memory of the composer’s uncle who died from cancer.

Movement One (Out of the Darkness), written in a minor key, contains a plaintive melody conveying sadness which later transforms to hope.

Movement Two (Into the Shadows) begins with a beautiful bass and alto flute duet written in quartal harmony.  The melody is introspective, yet, in conjunction with syncopated chords by 4ths, keeps moving the listener forward toward a climax of resignation.

Movement Three (Moving Toward the Light), written in a major key, conveys a feeling of hope and peace, ends with a touching chorale which extensively utilizes chords with added seconds.

Scored for piccolo, 3 flutes, alto flute, and bass flute, and opt. contrabass flute (doubling bass flute part)
