They are plentiful in Somerset in the West Country of England Though similar in appearance to a gargoyle, a hunky punk is purely decorative and has no other functional purpose whatsoever!! Unlike the gargoyle, which serves to drain water off the roof through its mouth. The theory behind hunky punks and grotesques in general, was that churches were designed to reflect the balance between good and evil, reminding worshippers of the narrow path leading through life. As a result, for every saint or animal that was intended to signify purity and ‘goodness’, there was also an ugly creature to signify evil and ‘badness’. Scored for 4 C Flutes, Alto and Bass Flute with optional Piccolo and Contrabass Flute parts. (A 6 C Flute version is also available.)This piece is in concert D minor and begins with a medieval type of fanfare which occurs throughout. What follows is a haunting theme with lots of flattened 5ths and several discords to represent the uncomfortable nature of this statue. The staccato and accent direction in most of the piece gives the impression of walking on eggshells not knowing what lies around the corner! Then a brief legato section of the fanfare appears to provide a calmer atmosphere before eventually returning to the main theme and big ending. A 6 C Flute version is also available.Set at intermediate level but on the youtube link there is the full score for you to assess suitability. It is nearly 5 mins in length and would be a great addition to a repertoire.Price is for the full score and all parts.

His symphony was composed while he was in America and was first performed by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893. It has been said that Dvorak's themes in his symphony were inspired by American folk melodies, especially Afro-American or American Indian. But his themes are just as similar to Bohemian folk music and most likely from that music. This arrangement is based on the one played in the movie Clear and Present Danger by the United States Air Force Band. It has been used at presidential funerals for the departure ceremonies at Andrews Air Force Base for Presidents Reagan and Ford and was used in 1998 for the dis-interment ceremony for the Vietnam Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery. Simple Gifts ('Tis the Gift to Be Simple), an American Shaker Song, written in 1848 and attributed to Elder Joseph Brackett, Jr. of Alfred, Maine, would be a great addition to any music library. The song was largely unknown outside Shaker communities until Aaron Copland used its melody for the score of Martha Graham's ballet, Appalachian Spring, first performed in 1944. Simple Gifts has now been arranged for a Flute Octet by Regis Bookshar. It is suitable for high school and college students, and, depending upon their ability, even elementary school students. Professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. It could be performed for concerts and church services. The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has often performed it for Weddings.
