Piano Solo.

This piece is intended to evoke the mood of a rainy day as much as the sounds of the rain itself. A pulsing bass line throughout most of the piece maintains the feeling of constant pulsing rain. The melodic themes tend to fall downward like raindrops. The rain gets blown by the wind, builds and dies away, is at times a heavy downpour and other times a light drizzle.

The Entertainer is sub-titled A Rag Time Two Step, which was a form of dance popular until about 1911, and a style which was common among rags written at the time. The piece is a 1902 classic piano rag written by Scott Joplin and it was sold first as sheet music, and in the 1910s as piano rolls that would play on player pianos.The first recording was by blues and ragtime musicians, the Blue Boys in 1928, played on mandolin and guitar.

Its structure is: Intro–AA–BB–A–CC–Intro2–DD.

It is primarily set in the key of C major; however, for the C section (commonly referred to as the 'Trio'), it modulates to the subdominant, F major, then through a transitional passage modulates back to C major for the D section. The B section contains an indication that the melody is to be played an octave higher on the repeat.

In the June 7, 1903, St. Louis Globe-Democrat, contemporary composer Monroe H. Rosenfeld described The Entertainer as the best and most euphonious of Joplin's compositions to that point. It is a jingling work of a very original character, embracing various strains of a retentive character which set the foot in spontaneous action and leave an indelible imprint on the tympanum.

Suggested by the rag's dedication to James Brown and his Mandolin Club, author Rudi Blesh wrote that some of the melodies recall the pluckings and the fast tremolos of the little steel-stringed plectrum instruments. Stark issued an arrangement of the piece for two mandolins and a guitar.

This descriptive piece expresses the gentle Spring rains that nourish the lands to encourage the long awaited foliage and flowers. The left hand part is a flowing triplet feel that provides the background chords that support a simple, plaintive melody in the right hand. In letter A section, the music reflects droplets of rain, some small and other droplets greater in size (legato and staccato). In letter B section, a repeat of the melody with the introduction of a G≤ chord leading into a set of chords that move the piece back to chord V (C7) of F minor (coda). In the coda, distant thunder is represented by a left-hand tremolo that swells in volume and fades away (morendo). The next piece in this series of 2 - part Piano/keyboard pieces will be May flowers. BRAVEHEART THEME for piano, in the key of Gb

The main theme of Braveheart begins with soft flute-like melody notes against a quiet background.  A fragment of the Scottish tune Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair weaves its way into the bottom of page one, and then deep chords at the top of page two give a low and ominous premonition of battle. 

Slowly it builds with bigger chords.  Dissonances compete in the melody and harmony, always building.  Big octave-plus-fifth left hand chords give a medieval sound.

The flavor of Braveheart, the movie, is captured in this arrangement.  Not too difficult, but with a few challenges, this is a satisfying piece to play over and over again, emotions soaring and always feeling like you are there with William Wallace in the fight for FREEDOM.

Two versions in different keys (F & Gb), but otherwise identical.  The arrangement in F is much easier, of course, and easier to read.  Though most of the music remains in the primary key (either F or Gb) Braveheart travels rapidly through several key transitions on pages 2-3 in the key of F, and pages 2-4 in the key of Gb.

Though the key of F is easier, the key of Gb seems to have a special magic, as piano pieces utilizing the black keys frequently do!  The piano recording heard in the video is performed in the key of Gb.
