My students love to play duets with me at their lessons, and sometimes for recitals, as well. This is Set 1 of my teacher accompaniments for the John Thompson Modern Course for the Piano, Second Grade. It includes accompaniments for the first 5 pieces of the book: In the Alps (for piano), On Yonder Rock (one for piano, one for soprano recorder), Hop O' My Thumb (for piano), Menuet (for piano), 'Round the Village (for piano). In my studio, we usually play these pieces as 2 piano duets, but they work equally well as one piano, four hand duet: we enjoy my playing the right hand of the accompaniment up an octave.

This is a recording of the printed piano accompaniment book. (Other Books also available are for flute, clarinet/trumpet, alto sax, French horn, and trombone.) These recordings may also be used for group singing. There is a short introduction, and enough repeats of the verses in case you would like to play or sing them all! While these recordings contain multiple verses, the print version contains only one verse with no introduction. Many hymns are in their original hymnal keys, but if not, they have been adjusted slightly for a better playing range.

This is one large file, containing all 50 accompaniments, plus one bonus recording-a harpsichord version of the first piece. For this reason, the cue point is given which is the time in the recording when each hymn occurs so they can be located more easily within this one-hour and 59-minute MP3.   (1) MARGARET DANCING.  (SO.      ) Like a Beethoven song and country dance, this piece offers pleasing melodies for the beginner who is well along, both to study and to perform in recital.

  (2) MUSICBOX. (SO.      )  This short easy piece imitates the sound of a music box, including its running down at the end.  For instruction it can serve to introduce the student to light staccato bowing or up and down slurred staccato bowing.  For performance it can serve as an amusing interlude.

  (3) HYMNSONG. (SO.      )  In the form of an etude, this piece consists of a simple theme with numerous variations, somewhat like Paganini’s famous Caprice 24.  Of intermediate difficulty, it offers double stops, tremolo, and various bowings. For performance it can be played as is or it can easily be shortened by omission of one or more passages.

  (4) MOTHER’S STORIES.  (SO.      ) Varying from sweet to dramatic, this simple composition offers an opportunity for emotional interpretation. Intermediate from that standpoint, It is otherwise basically easy. A nice recital piece.
