Written June 16, 2024, this is an original piano arrangement of the song by Billy Dean, “Somewhere in My Broken Heart” (originally released by Randy Travis and later as a single by Dean). Interestingly, the year before this song was released in 1990, Billy Dean called me and ask about my considering playing piano for him on tour in his band. He was one of the most kind and gracious people I have ever spoken to. At the time I wasn’t as familiar with his music, but after speaking with him I found out he had the number one country video in the country and the next year he released this song which was the CMA Song of the Year. It is a great song I’ve always loved and always wanted to play, so this week I did. BTW, the reason I didn’t was because I was working in a church and wouldn’t be free to travel. Looking back I wish I had. Hope you enjoy it.

You don't really hear this song until Christmas; however, with the latest troubles in the Middle East this song is the perfect song to learn and play at any time during the year.  I arranged it thinking about the continued conflict in Ukraine, the new conflict in the Middle East and the continuing gun violence in our own country. The song builds to the 3rd section where you can hear the anger come out because we cannot just get along. This section comes to a quick end and gives into a very calm end. This ending represent a reflection of what could be if we all did our part. Enjoy!!!!

My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Each of my arrangements is made for a specific student, so the results will vary in terms of playing level. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece. This arrangement was made for a mid-beginner student working in Level 3 of Alfred's Masterwork Classics. There is a bit of moving around the piano which might be uncomfortable for the student. This is a good thing, especially because the repetition really helps keep this manageable. Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.
