This is an easy arrangement for piano written in the key of C major. The accompaniment has been simplified for the left hand and the melody has little changes in some places to be easier to play. Also, the structure of the piece has been simplified so the length is shorter now. The sheet music has suggested fingering and pedal. This arrangement is perfect for early intermediate students. In 1995, I was asked to perform MEDITATION at a concert. It was this request that prompted me to transcribe this alluring and hauntingly emotional work for piano. 

Although traditionally performed by violinists or other instruments as a solo piece with orchestra, in this new piano transcription of MEDITATION, I have tried to capture the beauty and sensitivity of the melody and harmonies written by Massenet in 1894 for his opera Thaïs. 

This new transcription is clearly notated with dynamic marks, phrasing, suggested fingerings, and appropriate musical terms for playing. 

This piano transcription is a wonderful recital and encore piece for professionals and students.

This work is more famous for its violin + piano version than the original orchestral version (opera intermezzo). As I played the accompaniment many times, I came to love this song, and eventually wanted to reproduce all the sounds on a single piano.

For this reason, this arrangement has been extremely busy, with one person doing the work that would normally be shared by two people, and it is much more responsive to playing than it sounds...

Irénée Bergé (1867-1926) was a French composer, conductor and instructor who lived in the United States. In spite of confusions between his given name and Irène, Bergé was male. He attended the Conservatoire de Paris where he studied with Jules Massenet and Théodore Dubois. Although not mentioned in his obituaries, Berge apparently also was a tenor. In an 1897 performance of Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ, a reviewer noted Irénée Bergé, a young tenor of excellent schooling, whose voice—though not too powerful—had a very agreeable timbre, and a very distinguished [performance]. He and that of the orchestra....had a grand success. Before immigrating to the United States he was an assistant conductor at Covent Garden. At the invitation of Jeannette Thurber Bergé came to New York in 1902 to teach at the National Conservatory of Music of America. Bergé is known for composing many silent film music cues. These were not written for a specific film but as generic pieces appropriate to the mood of the specific scene. He wrote 2 operas.
