As the name entails, this piece is meant to reflect the warm summer breeze that moves over your skin and through your hair. The piece travels through a variety of moods, like a warm summer breeze would throughout the day. It begins as a calm and inviting gentle breeze that is comfortable to sit in and then it begins to take off as it moves into the following sections. After a tumultuous journey, the breeze finally settles again and returns to a gentle breeze in the afternoon.When writing this piece, I wanted to keep it simple and easy to listen to, but I couldn’t help but explore where the idea wanted to go. I think that this is a recurring theme for most of the pieces in this album as they have a section that is calm and of a reflective nature but then there are other sections that are more active and agile.It’s something I find difficult to write a piece that sticks to the one style, theme, or mood and really explores it deeply, but something that I’m inspired to do in my future compositions.

If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Each of my arrangements is made for a specific student, so the results will vary in terms of playing level. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece.This arrangement was made for a late intermediate / early advanced student currently working on Federation class Moderately Difficult 1. It was not easy for him, but he persisted and saw it through, giving an outstanding performance at a recital. I wanted this to be a challenge, but I also wanted to use it as an opportunity for voicing. That is why you will find many notes that are double-stemmed throughout this arrangement. My hope was to give him a little taste of Liszt's Liebestraum No. 3 since I really want him to play that next. But we really enjoyed this arrangement! It's a great piece on its own. I don't give any pedaling suggestions in the score, but these should be chosen carefully so that it doesn't get too muddy.

The piano sonatas by James Domine are cast in one movement and follow the traditional sonata-allegro form. The first of these, Piano Sonata #1 in C major opens with a lively theme in C major sweetened by the interpolation of a recurring f# that is marked with the tempo indication of Animato. The principal theme is followed by a contrastingly sentimental cantabile melody that has something of a jazz-ballad flavor set in the dominant key. These two themes are cunningly entwined through the development in an harmonic sequence that emerges into a playful recapitulation. The sonata ends with an open-spaced quartal figuration that implies the tonic key of C major but without implicitly spelling it out in its common triadic form. The subtitle Commedia dell’arte all’improvviso comes from the light-hearted comedic character of the principal theme that is treated throughout in a quasi-improvisational manner reminiscent of the sixteenth-century Italian theatrical style. This sonata, although begun at an earlier date, was completed in 2005 at the request of Joanna Ezrin, pianist and pedagogue as a vehicle for her students.

Whiskers now begins on his curious adventure into the unknown. He begins carefully stepping through the forest with caution into unfamiliar territory, his ear pricked to listen out for any sounds that might be someone or something else. As he makes his way through the forest looking for something to explore, the wind begins to pick up. The trees move in the wind and the leaves rustle and fly around Whiskers which causes him to panic.As the piece moves to a more active section with the use of semiquavers, Whiskers begins to run further into the forest, losing his sense of direction from the confusion caused by the wind and all the leaves about. Whiskers frantically tries to find his way back home but the wind grows stronger blowing more leaves around which makes it even harder to see where he’s going.Eventually the leaves settle back on the ground as the wind dies down and comes to a rest. Whiskers has stumbled across something he has never seen before in this forest, a house. It looks abandoned and like someone used to live there many decades ago. He stops in his tracks to take a good long look at the mysterious looking house that towers before him.

Meraki is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe what happens when you leave a piece of yourself (your soul, creativity, or love) in your work. When you love doing something, anything, so much that you put something of yourself into it.  Meraki means to do something with passion, with absolute devotion, with undivided attention. Meraki is derived from the Turkish Merak (Labor of love, to do something with pleasure). Usually applied to tasks, usually, creative or artistic tasks, but can be applied to any task at all. Lumokinesis (4:00). Lumokinesis is the ability to manipulate and control the element light at will. Kenopsia (4:00). Kenopsia is the eerie atmosphere of a place usually full of peple, but now abandoned and calm. Ataraxia (4:30). Tranquility, imperturbability, absence of wishes or fears. Petricor (3:30). Petrichor is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. Exulansis (3:45). The tendency to stop talking of one's experiences because people cannot reate to them.

There’s a funny little story with how I wrote this piece. I’ve got these dice called ‘Rory’s Story Cubes’ which have little pictures on them and they’re meant to be an ice breaker where you roll the dice and come up with a story based on the images that come up. Anyway, I thought of using them to help me come up with an idea for a new composition. So I rolled some of the dice and there was a picture of a fire, a house, and someone running - something like that, I can’t remember exactly what the pictures were. Then that prompted me to write this composition: ‘Fire in the House’. It was a great way to try something new and write something that I never would have thought to write if it were not for those dice.Through the piece I have written little annotations to explain what is happening in the story of the piece of music and the scene I was trying to reflect in the music. It was a fun little piece to write and I really enjoyed using the dice to come up with a story for me to write about - I should definitely do it more often to try something new and get out of my comfort zone. I highly recommend you pick some up one day if you write music too - they’re a great tool to have!

The composition has three distinct sections that are quite different from each other in the feel and style but are all tied together through the harmony. I really like the first of this piece though as it just has time to breath and is really open which is something I don’t explore as much as I’d like, I always feel like I need to keep the piece moving and something happening.The energy ramps up to the next notch in each section but I still tried to maintain the original harmony that was used in the first section. It’s definitely a different way to approaching the composition process and something I don’t do very much but it was a good way to try something new.

It's arranged by Stacy Fahrion/Whimsically Macabre Music (ASCAP).I get really excited when music can carry multiple contradictory meanings, and spend a lot of time thinking about how I can mess with my audience by making things sound familiar but wrong. When I saw the Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too episode of Black Mirror, I recognized the melody of the oddly upbeat pop song Ashley O was singing but couldn't quite place it because unconsciously I knew something was really off, and then slowly it dawned on me that it was a NIN cover, and I flipped out with utter joy that someone had just done something to me that I'm constantly trying to do to them. Every time the song played throughout the episode, I couldn't stop laughing, not just at the lyrics, but especially at a certain trite & upbeat sounding bassline and all of the different musical elements that completely changed the feel of the original. So of course I needed to write my own arrangement of that arrangement. I hope you enjoy it.
