Composed by Marcia L. McKenna. 21st Century,Children,Classical,Contemporary,Halloween. Score. 4 pages. Marcia L. McKenna #1086020. Published by Marcia L. McKenna (A0.1510814).

This piano solo is a journey through childhood memories of Halloween.  The child in you will remember the excitement of Halloween, running up to the doorsteps, ringing the bell, proudly showing off your costumes, yelling Trick or Treat! in unison, and eagerly watching to see which candies will be tossed into your bag. Once in awhile there was a really scary house on the street or someone was wearing a scary costume. Then after you tiredly trudged home, somehow you mustered up enough energy to scatter your candies and start munching! But alas, tiredness got the best of you as you drifted off into dreamland, happy and satisfied with your confectionary treasures that will last...hmm...maybe a few days? This music walks you through these childhood memories that will never get old.

Not only is it a fun piece to play and listen to, but it is also an excellent study in various rhythmic groupings, thirds, scale and broken chord passages, and most of all expression!  Enjoy!

For James: a kind of lullaby (1993)

Built in 1898 the James Monaghan Mansion--now, and since 1942 the home of Gonzaga University's music department--was for many years believed to be haunted. In addition to reports of disembodied footsteps, doors dramatically opening themselves, and sudden appearances of hostile presences, there was also reports of the organ playing itself...

...which is where I, primarily an organ student at the time, spent a majority of my time. This piece was written entirely at the organ, on that organ while an organ and piano student at Gonzaga. Written in four layers as if for organ, in the end I found that it sounded much better on the piano. It has never been performed or recorded on organ.

The working title was Excorsising Monaghan.  The finished piece sounded less ghostly and more like a lullaby. Whether or not it was James doing the haunting, I thought it best to offer the lullaby to him.

Now Whiskers has come across this mysterious house in the forest, he approaches it with curiosity and cautiousness. This is reflected in the start of the piece where the chords are slow and cautious but they eventually turn into quaver broken chords as Whiskers begins to have a look around the house, taking care in every step he takes. As Whiskers explores the outside of the house, he finds smashed windows, broken doors, rotting wood, and a once loved and alive home, abandoned and forgotten, left to rot and fall apart.

He comes back around to the front of the house now that he has had a good look around it and has a decision to make. Does his curious nature take him inside to explore the unknown, with a possibility of finding food or a safe place to live or does he go back and find his way back home? Of course, Whiskers can’t help himself and he decides to venture into the house to find out what lies inside.
