Lowry took his inspiration from a crystal clear river with water of life described in the Book of Revelations, and it has also become connected with the custom of baptism, particularly in rivers. A number of American movies in the 20th century, including Stagecoach, Tobacco Road, and Wagon Master, have also featured this hymn.This arrangement for Intermediate Piano solo in the key of G major includes an interlude from As a Tree Beside the Water by Alfred H. Originally he viewed it as a fight song for the football team, but later the piece was adapted as the unofficial March of the US Navy. It appears hear as a piano solo with no pedalling, although the arranger hopes that the player might feel free to use some pedalling here and there.

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad was selected in 2008 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.The music score for The 7th Voyage of Sinbad was composed by Bernard Herrmann, better known at the time for his collaboration with the director Alfred Hitchcock.
