In 2010, AMOUR LOINTAIN (LOVE FROM AFAR) won 2nd in the Division 7 State Contest sponsored by the Music Teachers' Association Of California.

After attending a piano concert in 2009 featuring several works by Maurice Ravel, Robert was inspired to write this piano work in the style of the Impressionistic French composers. 

It comprises lyrical melodies in mostly 9/8 and 5/4 meters and sequential patterns, using predominately notes from the whole tone scales.

The left hand ostinato occurs mostly throughout while the right hand melody is heard in different keys. As the piece concludes, there is a brief reprise of the waltz melody that slowly fades away.

The score is clearly and carefully notated with dynamic marks, phrasing, pedal indications, suggested fingerings, and appropriate musical terms for playing.

This piano solo makes a wonderful recital and encore piece that will delight audiences...ideal for both students and professionals.

‘Salut d’amour’ is one of Edward Elgar’s best-known works. He composed the short duo for violin and piano in 1888 as an engagement present for his piano student Caroline Alice Roberts, whom he then married the following year. The dedication ‘à Carice’ was derived from her initials. Since Alice spoke German very well, Elgar originally chose the title ‘Liebesgruß’. The publishers Schott, to whom he sold all rights for a one-off fee of just two guineas in 1888, changed the title to the French ‘Salut d’amour’ in order to exploit the sales potential. The present piano version (plate number 24787-2) was created by Elgar himself and was published by Schott in 1889 along with the editions for violin and piano and for small chamber orchestra. Later, without Elgar’s involvement, the piece was arranged and published for all possible instrumental combinations. Elgar was naturally annoyed that he did not benefit financially himself from this success and in a letter to Novello & Co. In 1897 wrote: ‘[Salut d’amour] which unfortunately I sold some years ago for a nominal sum, now sells well – I understand 3000 copies were sold in the month of January alone.’.

Marriage d'Amour is a popular piano piece often associated with romantic themes and is widely recognized for its beautiful, melancholic melody. The piece is frequently misattributed to Frédéric Chopin due to its classical style and emotional depth, but it was actually composed by French pianist and composer Paul de Senneville in 1979.

The confusion surrounding the piece also comes from another title, Chopin's Spring Waltz, under which it has been falsely circulated, especially on the internet. However, Marriage d'Amour is purely Paul de Senneville's work, composed for the record label Delphine, which he co-founded with Olivier Toussaint. The piece was originally performed by pianist Richard Clayderman, who is known for his interpretations of romantic and easy-listening piano music.

The piece itself is characterized by its flowing, lyrical melody and gentle waltz rhythm, making it a favorite for weddings and romantic occasions. Marriage d'Amour is loved by pianists and audiences alike for its simplicity and the emotional resonance it evokes, making it a timeless and enduring piece in the repertoire of romantic piano music.
