Performance Notes: Toccata is a musical form, usually for keyboard instruments, written in a free style that includes brilliant passagework characterized by fast tempos, rapid notes and runs, intricate thythms, 
complex harmonies, and other virtuoso elements designed to show off the performer’s skill and dexterity. 

This miniature toccata for piano features a single persistent staccato note, repeated by the left hand, while the right hand continually crosses over the left to play the melody above and below the repeated note. Since the staccato element is a feature of the music, pedaling is not used, except at measure 50.

Set the metronome at a slow tempo for learning: quarter note =70, and much higher for performance: quarter note = 100 - 250. The faster it is played, the more impact it has on the listener!

This 40 measure scherzo was composed mainly for enjoyment by beginners  to play at their own skill level, and for advanced pianists as an exercise in artistry, bringing out  delicate phrasing, counter melody lines in the bass, varying dynamics, and projecting a light hearted  feeling throughout. The suggested tempo of  q.=90 is entirely optional, of course, giving beginners a comfortable pace, while allowing advanced players go display their artistry and technique at a more brilliant level  .

“Someone to Watch Over Me� is one of the Gershwins’ most iconic songs, written by Ira for his wife Leonore in commemoration of their marriage on September 14, 1926. The song made its Broadway debut in the hit musical Oh, Kay! (1926). The musical featured Victor Moore as Jimmy and Gertrude Lawrence as Kay. Even though the show as a whole was wildly popular, Gertrude Lawrence’s rendition of “Someone to Watch Over Me� was the show’s big hit.

Someone to Watch Over Me was written by George Gershwin initially as a fast and jazzy up-tempo rhythm tune – marked scherzando (playful) in the sheet music – but in the 1930s and 1940s it was recorded by singers in a slower ballad form, which became the standard. The definitive slow torch song version was first released by Lee Wiley in 1939, followed by Margaret Whiting in 1944.

This arrangement as a Piano Solo, Is in the slower ballad tempo. Where the embellishments are intricate, suggested fingerings are included in the score.
