By Andrew Harrison. By Andrew Harrison. 20th Century,Blues,Classical,Instructional,Jazz. Score. 24 pages. Phantom Dog Music #802644. Published by Phantom Dog Music (A0.1204070).

Piano Fantasia No. 1 takes its inspiration from jazz composer and pianist Andrew Hill, who has been a strong influence. The work employs syncopation and rhythm as a driving force, reflecting and reinterpreting Hill's percussive and polyrhythmic approach to the piano. As the piece unfolds, moments of lyricism and beauty emerge out of the rhythmic intensity, often in abstracted gestures looking to escape the dominant rhythmic landscape.

The piece is in three movements; the first and third movements are fully notated, the second movement is a structured improvisation. The performance notes include a detailed description of the requirements for executing the second movement.

The Storm Before The Calm is dedicated to my 21-month old son Daniel, and reflects the many moments of pleasure that I get from being with him on a daily basis. True to his personality, the piece contains sudden shifts of dynamics and tempo, as we ride the different waves of his exciting and often emotional life together. The title refers to the wonderful storm that tears through the house whilst he is awake, only to be quelled at the end of the night into a restful (and blessed!) calm when he finally goes to bed.

The Storm Before The Calm would suit an advanced student to a professional pianist.

The Drumfire Was Incessant, and Continued All Night With Unabated Fury is a solo piano piece, inspired by Newton Wanliss’s harrowing account of the Battle of Pozieres in his 1929 war biography The History of the 14th Battalion, A.I.F. The Battle of Pozieres ran between July and August 1916, as part of the First World War’s Somme Offensive. The composition focuses on the days leading up to August 9th, 1916, when my great-great uncle Private Leslie Robins, an infantryman in the 14th Battalion, was shot and wounded.

In the early stages of writing the piece, whilst conducting preliminary research into the Battle of Pozieres, I was struck by the disparity between the British High Command’s notion of formulating a ‘plan’ for the battle, and the actuality of what occurred once soldiers ‘went over the top’ into no-man’s land. This dichotomous concept – exerting control over an inherently fluid and dynamic situation – I found to be most intriguing. It segued neatly into my aesthetic explorations of the role of improvisation (a dynamic process) within a larger notated context (a controlled environment). I decided that this dichotomy would play a fundamental role within the piece.

Australian pianist Zubin Kanga commissioned The Drumfire… for his 2012 Spectrum concert series. The piece was given its world premiere on August 11th 2012 at the Melbourne Recital Centre, and was also performed at the Independent Theatre in Sydney on August 16th 2012.

By Mirla. By Emily Mirla Harrison. Arranged by Andrew Rostas. Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score. 4 pages. Little Symphony Records #318361. Published by Little Symphony Records (A0.710426).

A romantic, stirring piano solo, influenced by the Romantics, particularly Rachmaninoff. A passionate protest piece, that decries the futility of imperial wars and pays homage to those unsung women of Mirla’s generation, whose patience, stoicism and quiet passion helped them to endure and steel our nation to the horrors of war. It begins in gut-wrenching piano motif. An expression of all the sadness and sufferings of war. Then, it drops, into a deep well of fury, with dark, pulsating ostinato base notes; an echoed refrain from … Konyu Cutting. The tension and anger builds with each register lift, with each slamming note and chord shift, before an impossibly dramatic breakdown, with a stark rhythm change and hugely satisfying and dignified chords that pound the keys, to smash imperial ambitions and celebrate of love and humanity. The piece is a feminine response to the masculine context of “… Konyu Cutting. It ends with a return and resolution of that deadly piano motif.
