SKU: A0.1035856

Composed by Traditional French Carol, James Chadwick. Arranged by Jake Smolowe. Christmas,Jazz. Score. 2 pages. ArrangeMe #6904239. Published by ArrangeMe (A0.1035856).

This is the lead sheet version of Jake Smolowe's recording of Angels We Have Heard on High, from his 2021 album Christmas Solo: Informal, Improvised. The chart includes the lead melody line, detailed chord symbols throughout, and a notated piano intro/interlude.

Length: 2 pages

Notes from Jake:

This arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High is kind of an ode to Brad Mehldau’s many jazz waltz arrangements over the years (for example, She’s Leaving Home, from Day is Done). I wanted to capture the feel of Mehldau’s classic trio waltzes, not just the piano but the drums and bass too. The A sections feature a constantly rising chord progression, with slight differences in chord quality between the first two A’s, and then the B sections highlight some more dramatic reharmonizations as well as a dichotomy between straight-eighths/behind the beat melody and swung accompaniment. The intro, which also serves as the outro vamp as well as an interlude between choruses, includes a bell-like theme that I hope instantly conjures up the Christmas/holiday spirit.

Tips for Performance:

The intro/interlude/outro can be tricky! I encourage watching the YouTube video and or/listening to the mp3 to get a sense of the timing for the fingering switches and pedaling. Also, in the B sections, the LH is often swinging while the right hand plays straight eighths; as with the intro, the best way to lock down this feel is to check out the YouTube video.

Arranged by Brenda Dillon. Classical,Standards. Score. 3 pages. Dillon's Music Group #6052669. Published by Dillon's Music Group (A0.918270).

Panis angelicus is Latin for bread of angels or angelic bread.  This arrangement is included in Classical Interpretations Collection. The best known of all the settings of Panis Angelicus is by Cesar Franck.  This motet was originally written for tenor solo, organ and string orchestra.  Franck had large hands which could span twelve white keys on the keyboard.  He was also recognized for his exemplary improvisational skill.

About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement.  She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday.  She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S.  In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching.  She has publications with Hal Leonard and Alfred Music listed on her website (www.brendadillon.com).

♫ Charles Wesley started his poem with ‘Listen to the angels !’ This started me wondering, what did the angels’ voices sound like ?
♫ Prosody is study of the intonation, stress, and rhythm of the speech of a language (contrasted with the sounds of the vowels and consonants.) Could I replicate the angel’s basic speech patterns? My study of Greek in seminary has given me a pretty good idea of how to pronounce the consonants and vowels of the Greek language. But I would want to listen to someone who actually speaks Greek as their mother tongue to have an idea of the prosody. After further study, I have rewritten the angels’ music; this update represents my latest understanding.
♫ Although Latin was the language of the Roman conquerors, Greek was the lingua franca of the Mediterranean world of the first century. Some scholars want us to believe that most of the Jews were not erudite enough to speak Greek.
♫ Yet those of us who have travelled to countries like Haiti, are not surprised that many people there speak Kreyòl, French, English and Spanish!
♫ I began searching for someone who actually spoke Greek conversationally to pronounce Luke 2 :14 in Greek. After I found a reliable source, I reduced the rhythm and the accented sylables to simpified music notation. I pulled from my knowledge of ancient modes and used my imagination to add pitches and repetitions of phrases. The melodic and harmonic result is completely inventive, but I believe the basic rhythm of the speech is fairly accurate.
