De Jesu?s Ravelo, is based on the first edition of the work made in 1897 with the musical print designed in Leipzig by C. G. Ro?der. This collection of waltzes is dedicated to the composer’s then fiance?e, Miss Josefa de la Fuente, known as “Pepita”, whom he would marry in 1902. In addition, it is documented the composer’s intention to raise funds with the edition of this work and allocate them to the project of the Independencia Park in Santo Domingo. Hence the inscription “mi ofrenda al Parque ‘Independencia’” on the cover, which we have decided to recreate as a tribute, also including a reinterpretation of the original illustration allegorical to the Dominican independence. Therefore, in addition to being one of the first known printed editions of Dominican music, the “Pita” waltz suite is also circumscribed to the history of the development and expansion of our capital city, linked to the process of construction of one of its most important landmarks. We are grateful for the initiative of the Fundacio?n Copistas Acuario for reissuing this work as a result of its continuous work to rescue the national musical heritage. Now, let’s delve into this story of a young Ravelo in love and let’s be moved along with him by the music that inspired his love.

The Pitcairn Islands are a remote British colony in the South Pacific, famous for being the site where the mutineers from the HMS Bounty landed. The islands’ population have always been very small (currently numbering around 50), yet, aside from the official anthem of God Save the King (which is not heard often on the islands), there have been, and continue to be, many unofficial anthems in use in the colony.In Diana Jolliffe Belcher’s 1871 book “The Mutineers of the Bounty and their Decendants in Pitcairn and Norfolk Island� it is reported that a local poem by Rev. G. H. Nobbs was set to the tune “Rousseau’s Dream� (sheet music) and was considered by Pitcairners to be their anthem at the time. It is not known for how long this was considered as their anthem, however. Also, in 1856, several Pitcairners resettled on Norfolk Island as Pitcairn had become too small. The local anthem now in use on Norfolk Island, Come Ye Blessed, is also referred to as the “Pitcairn Anthem�, and more than likely was brought to the island by the Pitcairn settlers, suggesting that this anthem was in use on Pitcairn at that time, and is also heard on Pitcairn currently.Currently, the song “We From Pitcairn Island� (to the tune of the hymn “The Royal Telephone�) is used as an unofficial anthem at gatherings and the like. The lyrics were written by Pitcairner Melva Evans with assistance from the local Seventh Day Adventist Pastor L. A. J. Webster in 1962 to be performed by the school children on board a visiting cruise ship, but the song became identified by residents as their unofficial anthem. Other songs, such as “The Goodbye Song� (written by Pitcairner Amelia Young), and the hymn “In The Sweet By and By� are considered unofficial “Pitcairn songs� at gatherings as well. The Drumfire Was Incessant, and Continued All Night With Unabated Fury is a solo piano piece, inspired by Newton Wanliss’s harrowing account of the Battle of Pozieres in his 1929 war biography The History of the 14th Battalion, A.I.F. The Battle of Pozieres ran between July and August 1916, as part of the First World War’s Somme Offensive. The composition focuses on the days leading up to August 9th, 1916, when my great-great uncle Private Leslie Robins, an infantryman in the 14th Battalion, was shot and wounded.In the early stages of writing the piece, whilst conducting preliminary research into the Battle of Pozieres, I was struck by the disparity between the British High Command’s notion of formulating a ‘plan’ for the battle, and the actuality of what occurred once soldiers ‘went over the top’ into no-man’s land. This dichotomous concept – exerting control over an inherently fluid and dynamic situation – I found to be most intriguing. It segued neatly into my aesthetic explorations of the role of improvisation (a dynamic process) within a larger notated context (a controlled environment). I decided that this dichotomy would play a fundamental role within the piece.Australian pianist Zubin Kanga commissioned The Drumfire… for his 2012 Spectrum concert series. The piece was given its world premiere on August 11th 2012 at the Melbourne Recital Centre, and was also performed at the Independent Theatre in Sydney on August 16th 2012.

Bien allantDate de composition : 17 septembre 1945In 1945 Leguerney finished composition of the Fantaisie en sol mineur pour piano, written in three movements. He felt an â??extraordinary enthusiasmâ?� for this piece, which he felt represented a departure from the current writing style for piano. He said in an interview with Patrick Choukroun in 1994 that â??I wanted to show that one could write lyrically for the piano. The piano music of Francis Poulenc lacked strength.â?� The work was immediately performed in a private concert at the home of the Countess Jean de Polignac by the French pianist Monique Haas (1909-1987) in December 1945. The fact that she waschosen to perform Leguerneyâ??s Fantaisie is a key to the style of this work which Leguerney felt emulated the expressive force of Cesar Franckâ??s works. Haas was a distinguished concert artist, especially known for her performances of 20th century music, with which she toured worldwide. French pianists of her generation tried to avoid the excess of the â??romanticâ?� school and strove for cleanness and precision with a warm tone color reflecting the influence of Alfred Cortot.Leguerney remembers that both Poulenc and Henri Sauguet were present at this private concert, but he noted that they did not comment about his piece. He felt it was obvious that his Fantaisie was â??far from the habitual level of piano musicâ?� being composed at that time. These post-war years were Leguerneyâ??s most productive period. In addition to the Fantaisie, hecomposed the Sonatine pour violin et piano, the Quatuor à cordes, and many fine songs including the cycle Sept Poèmes de François Maynard. The 1940s finished with the composition of his first ballet, Endymion. The first public performance of the Fantaisie was given by Stéphane Petit-Jean in the Cloître Saint-Sauveur at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence on July 28, 1988 during a recital for Radio France that included songs of Leguerney interpreted by Nathalie Stutzmann. The concert was laterbroadcast as Une heure avec . . . Jacques Leguerney and also included the song cycles Sept Poèmes de François Maynard, La Nuit and Le Carnaval.The work is dedicated to Jean Fonda, the stage name of Jean-Pierre Fournier. He was the son of the famed French cellist Pierre Fournier. Before the performance at Aix-en-Provence, Leguerney showed the score of the Fantaisie to Fonda, who encouraged him to have it performed. It is possible that the dedication was made at this time.
