First sung on Christmas Eve in 1818 to a lilting 6/8 melody composed in the manner of Austrian folksong, this carol was soon sung the world over. Over the years the melody has changed slightly and only three of the six original verses are sung. After presenting both melodies, this setting ends with a surprising and delightful Coda using the full range of the piano. The setting provides an opportunity to discuss the history of the carol and will be a welcome addition to Christmas celebrations of all kinds. This arrangement of the traditional Austrian carol, keeps the melody recognizable, accompanying it with warm jazz harmonies, suspended chords, and a bit of melody variation.  The theme is followed by a calm relaxing improvisation that is easy to read and learn, accompanied by a simple chord progression.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.950930). I don’t recall when I first heard this Austrian carol, but I immediately fell in love with it and knew that it must be a part of this collection. Written in the somewhat unusual meter of 5/4, (before shifting over to 6/4), this prelude is one of the less technically demanding pieces in the set, though it does make use of much of the piano’s vast range. The simple chordal treatment of the melody over arpeggiated chords imparts an air of tranquility that is maintained throughout the first verse. When it transitions to 6/4 for the second verse, the use of the low octaves in the left hand give an even greater sense of gravity to the prelude and the off-beats in the right hand must be played with an almost clock-like precision to create the impression of stillness and the vastness of eternity. The closing chordal progression is one of my favorite moments in all of these pieces as I tried to capture the uncertainty, yet inevitability of time.

Yuletide Medley includes three beloved carols - O Little Town of Bethlehem, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear and Silent Night.  The text of the first one was written by an Episcopal priest.  The second one may have been influenced by Felix Mendelssohn, a contemporary of the composers.  Silent Night is an Austrian folk-carol originally composed for soloists, choirs and guitar, but was first sung as a duet with guitar accompaniment.  It is one of the most recorded songs in the world. It is included in Memories of Christmas Collection-Book 2- by Brenda Dillon .About the arranger:  Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement.  She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday.  She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S.  In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching.  She has publications with Hal Leonard and Alfred listed on her website (www.brendadillon.com).
