The Hindemith pupil Harald Genzmer (1909–2007) worked with virtually all music genres and composed works for many, even unusual instruments (such as the trautonium). He also wrote compositions for the piano, of course, and in 1938 published a major work, Sonata No. 1. For Richards Laugs who had worked in Mannheim since 1945, first as musical director at the National Theatre, then as director of the local music academy, he wrote '3 Tänze' for piano the autograph of which was discovered among the effects of Laugs' widow only recently. In September 1835, Chopin presented an autograph copy of this waltz as a farewell gift to Marie Wodzinska, to whom he was once engaged. This autograph is kept in the National Library of Poland in Warsaw. The present edition represents this autograph. There also exists a different autograph of this waltz, kept at the Conservatoire de Paris, but it is considered to be a less refined version. Moreover, the posthumous edition of Jules Fontana presents yet another version, which does not correspond to any known autograph.
