It was originally composed for strings. This version for keyboard of the hornpipe is Purcell's own transcription (hence the letter T in its catalog number Z. T683). The hornpipe is a rather lively dance whose name probably derives from the single-reed instrument that was originally used to accompany it. Ornaments were added as a common performance practice in Henry Purcell's time.
