 the head photos in carved marble

sad smell of the past along your tree-lined avenue

how much peace in this place

where you stand hidden

cobwebs on your time and the scent of regret

 while I touch your beautiful face

 I ask myself who decided that your time would stop and that for you all would be over

 

 I, minstrel of my time, tell a thousand stories

 chronicles written in pencil real-life stories

story now finished my fingers still drive,

 find notes and then the enchantment to disperse them in the wind

there was a king in love, by a bewitched spell,

with the madwoman his queen and everything comes back as before

there tucked away in a corner

 There is a pathetic clown

Look closer: it’s a little girl and everything comes back as before

 

You clown what would you do?

You want to approach the king and then you want to tell him of her polluted heart

but him, he does not want to be touched and you have to amuse her

smile and do not tire continue your ... dance ...

in the void and silence

suspended in time

 for your queen and everything comes back as before

 before your leap

mixed-up Icarus you have fallen into emptiness

 

the beating of the heart makes too much noise

The winter does not end

the cold seems eternal

 here the sun dies ,effaces itself and then disappears

 

Once upon a time there was or still is, who knows

a minstrel that no longer has a court

while closing the door ,the king will delete him

nothing caresses, no kiss of goodby

my name in history was written in pencil

to be able to delete from a faded page

 

the mind has its woodworm and you can not heal it

past, present and she who reigns everywhere

for a king, tired and sick,

who has not had a happy ending

the spell is broken and now the veil has fallen

The breeze of summer that

It ends and goes away

And leave it inside you

Melancholy

Between the anonymous crowd

of this city

And you seem to notice me

You'll miss a beat

Remember us

Of the open-air nights

Exploring feelings of abandonment and isolation....In 1985, while still thinking of myself as songwriter, a mentor presented me with the challenge of setting three Psalms to music.  But the catch was that these settings would have to be solo piano pieces: Songs Without Words.

How Long Will You Forget Me? (Psalm 13) was the first composition to come out of that challenge and my first notated instrumental piece. Out of the Depths (Psalm 130) was the second. (I still have yet to compose the third one.)

I've written and discarded more pieces than I can count, but this  simple little piece has stuck with me.  I can see sparks in it of works that were to come later.  Simple and naive as it is, it still sounds like my own voice.

♫ Martin Luther wrote Ein Feste Burg sometime between 1527 and 1529. (Luther published the Ninety-five Theses in 1517 and was excommunicated in 1521.) Ein Feste Burg was translated into English by Miles Coverdale in 1539 with the title, Oure God is a defence and towre. The English text most familiar to me was translated by Francis Hedge in 1853.
♫ Luther believed in the power of music. In 1558 in the Forward to Georg Rhau's Symphoniae he wrote “I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God. … next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits.... Our dear fathers and prophets did not desire without reason that music be always used in the churches. Hence, we have so many songs and psalms. This precious gift has been given to man alone that he might thereby remind himself that God has created man for the express purpose of praising and extolling God.�
♫ In his lifetime, Luther made 3 major contributions to the Church: the doctrine of salvation by faith alone, the belief that Scripture should be translated into the people's language (producing a translation of the Bible into German), and the birth of congregational singing. In Roman Catholic churches of his day, only the cantor and a chorus sang the mass in Latin. He was determined to restore congregational singing in German to the church.
♫ In the slides, I have featured the Citadelle Laferrière, a fortress in Northern Haiti, commissioned in 1805 by Henri Christophe and completed in 1820, following Haiti’s independence from France in 1804.

Simple and groovin at times and also Harmonically daring and rich with great resonance. Big Chords and great nonfunctional Gospel sounding voice leading produces a striking example of the beauty qualities of this astounding gem. Piece includes multiple distinct and unique themes and developments before concluding. 3 page arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Deeply funky tune draws from inspiration in Hezekiah Walker, Chick Corea, Ricky Dillard, Charlie Parker, and Theolonious Monk. It was used for a piano and drum prelude in church, for a moment in time.
