Serafim Sergeyevich Tulikov (Russian: Серафи�м Серге�евич Ту�ликов; July 7, 1914 – January 29, 2004) was a Russian and Soviet composer, who was born in the Imperial Russia, and died in Russia. He was often credited as S. Tulikov in his musical works and his cameo appearance in Russian television series. Serafim Tulikov is known for his patriotic and officially ideological compositions.

In his more lyrical songs of his early career, Tulikov developed his style of heartfelt and quiet melodies. Such songs include My Love, my Life (Жизнь мо�, любовь мо�) (lyrics by Anton Prishelets), I Love You, my Sea (Я люблю теб�, море) (lyrics by Anatoly Salnikov), Above the Moscow River (�ад Мо�квою-рекой) (lyrics by Lev Kondyrev), and Golden Altai (�лтай золотой) (lyrics by Tsezar Solodar). The composer also made his contribution to a subgenre of the Soviet song, the army song. He authored a song dedicated to the Soviet Pacific Fleet, Above the Bleak Kuriles Range (�ад �ерой Куриль�кой гр�дою) (lyrics by Nikolai Bukin), a work which combined elements of heroic devotion to the Motherland with pensiveness and longing for the far-away family and its comforts.

In reflecting on the sources of inspiration for his songs, Serafim Tulikov later confessed that it came mostly from the reminiscences of his homeland, Kaluga, and most of the elements within the songs were present in Kaluga. In the early 1960s, Tulikov would write a song dedicated to Kaluga, properly entitled The Town of My Youth (Город юно�ти моей) (lyrics by Mikhail Pliatskovsky), a sweet and unassuming yet sincere and heartfelt song.

During Khrushchev's Virgin Lands Campaign of bringing the vast steppes of Kazakhstan and South Siberia into agricultural use, Tulikov composed another well known song, Komsomol Direction (Ком�омоль�ка� путевка) (lyrics by Tsezar Solodar), which declared: On the go! On the go! The Komsomol direction calls us! And the merry song at the threshold sees us off forward!

A Ragtime style novelty piano piece with a Bachesque cameo in the middle. I woke up Sunday morning after dreaming about being young and writing hit songs. Unfortunately I couldn’t remember any of the amazing music in my dream. Anyway I thought I’d better write something and this was the result. As I hadn’t written anything all summer (we had about 3 sunny days – good for Northern England) I wanted to write something happy but also melancholy with English picnics, cucumber sandwiches and tea! plus the usual traditional weather…

English folk song.

I have set this melody in several arrangements; this is actually the most rambunctious of the lot! This is bravura piano playing and not for the faint of heart. The right hand has a long passage of double notes at 16th-note speed. The left hand plays 8th-note many-octave-spanning double notes for much of the arrangement, and then has double notes at 16th-note speed for the final section. To perform this will require a lot of practice and then sheer (relaxed!) bravado.

Forest Green is really my all-time favorite melody. I anticipate setting it a dozen or more different ways.

For example, this is the melody the English use for the Christmas carol O Little Town of Bethlehem, and I have arranged it more lyrically for that song. Perhaps someday it will make it onto a CD.

I have also used this melody for the final section of my arrangement of All Through the Night on Under the Greenwood Tree. That is a far more lyrical arrangement as well.

This melody, in a highly arranged version, also makes a cameo in These Hands Held Music, on Passages.

All of these arrangements are currently available in pdf. Who knows, perhaps someday I’ll create an entire album of arrangements of Forest Green!

I wanted to write this one in the Silent movie (novelty piano) style but tried to get away from my ostentacious classical cameo's in the development section. Unfortunately sanity did not prevail and I ended up inserting an Irish Jig instead. I am not sure that it works but I can only write as the inspiration (from a leprechaun in this case) dictates. The frantic pace and technical challenges would be great for piano recitals though.
