I have freely arranged this into a pulsing light jazz piece with an Intro, three sections, and a Coda; which each build in volume and rhythmic intensity. The Intro is straight from the Jacobs-Bond piece; it is the only part of the song that is. For section 1 I rhythmically augment (double the note values) of the melody and add a pulsing drone beat in the LH. In section 2 I double time the melody and syncopate it, then reharmonize it, and add harmonic movement to the still pulsing bass line. Section 3 adds syncopation and stride to the LH. The Coda is an extended riff and cadence. A Study in Symbols is a piano solo arrangement of the 1901 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano.  I have turned this piece into a Charleston dance, inspired by the original Charleston song which created this genre.  I have taken the Jacobs-Bond simple 8 bar chromatic theme, altered the rhythm, and embedded it into the chords of my own opening chorus theme.   Everything else I totally made up to create my Charleston in true 1920's style.  This includes a new contrasting B theme in the relative minor key for the verse.  The song is in ABA format with a repeat.  Full of energy and history, and great fun to play, this piece works for dance, pleasure, or a showstopping concert encore.  3 page score; 2:10 minutesThis piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 53 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.

There is then a brief recapitulation of the oom-pah-pah theme, and a soft lento ballad ending.
