Composed by Stuart Sosnoski. Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Score. 3 pages. Stuart Sosnoski #2881239. Published by Stuart Sosnoski (A0.966505).

It’s Phrygian Out There uses the sound of the E Phrygian scale to suggest a snowstorm.  Uncommon in the early intermediate levels, the Phrygian scale helps students envision a snowstorm and to control the piece accordingly.  Feathered beaming in measure two is also a technique not commonly found in early intermediate piano solos however, my students are very capable of understanding and performing them, foreshadowing, and teaching, higher level techniques.  In the B section, the melody on the right hand is double voiced.  Once again, a technique not commonly found on this level but one easily understood and performed by my students.  It’s Phrygian Out There is well liked in my studio and I am sure your students will enjoy it fully.

By Steve Stanfill. By William B. Bradbury. Arranged by Steve Stanfill. Chamber,Christian,Praise & Worship,Traditional. Score. 2 pages. Steve Stanfill #916118. Published by Steve Stanfill (A0.1328143).

This is an arrangement of the  19th centruy hymn Sweet Hour of Prayer, attributed to William B. Bradbury.  It is suitable for prelude, postlude, or performance in Church services, combining the hymn tune with motifs from Giacomo Meyerbeer's hymn commonly set as Jesus Once of Humble Birth.  Both of these hymns have common usage in Christian congregations today, and will be particularly familiar to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Performance Practice:  This hymn should not be rushed but shouldn't drag either.  Markings are not included for damper pedal under the assumption that it's use should be rather intuitive given the harmonic rythum of the piece.  Occasional non-harmonic notes (mostly augmented 9ths)  in chords are intentional and should be present but not prominent--there to provide tension and color only.

Composed by Jonathan Williams. Contemporary. Score. 5 pages. Jonathan Williams #806871. Published by Jonathan Williams (A0.1208769).

Vagabond Jonathan Williams (b. 1991)

As the title suggests, Vagabond lacks a tonal center, or key (i.e. C major). Some refer to all such music as “atonal,†yet sections of this piece include a variety of chords and chord progressions that hint towards traditional tonality. For example, the first three rolled chords could be labeled B diminished, A major seventh, and F dominant ninth, respectively. Regardless of their possible names, these are chords commonly heard in tonal music, especially classical and jazz works.

While the piece weaves through hinted key areas, the melody wanders as well. The first two measures of the unaccompanied, opening theme include all twelve pitch classes (A, A♯, B, …, G, G♯) exactly once. This is called a “row,†and it is essential to twelve-tone music as first created by Arnold Schönberg (1874 - 1951). The remainder of Vagabond exclusively includes manipulations of the opening row. Various renderings of the row are audibly similar, while the majority obscure their resemblance by splitting the row across the hands, combining adjacent notes into chords, or modifying the rhythm.

After a final reprise of the opening, Vagabond commences with a series of fading chords and a last chord that may sound like a dominant seventh chord in its least common inversion. In this context, the sound and feel of a dominant seventh chord is lost. While this quality is frequently used as a penultimate chord to instill intensity before an anticipated finale, in Vagabond it serves to let the listener imagine an endless wandering.

Composed by Scott Joplin. Arranged by Theoria Music. 20th Century,Folk,Traditional. Score. 4 pages. Theoria Music Publishing #3624287. Published by Theoria Music Publishing (A0.894344).

The Entertainer is sub-titled A Rag Time Two Step, which was a form of dance popular until about 1911, and a style which was common among rags written at the time. The piece is a 1902 classic piano rag written by Scott Joplin and it was sold first as sheet music, and in the 1910s as piano rolls that would play on player pianos. The first recording was by blues and ragtime musicians, the Blue Boys in 1928, played on mandolin and guitar.

Its structure is: Intro–AA–BB–A–CC–Intro2–DD.

It is primarily set in the key of C major; however, for the C section (commonly referred to as the 'Trio'), it modulates to the subdominant, F major, then through a transitional passage modulates back to C major for the D section. The B section contains an indication that the melody is to be played an octave higher on the repeat.

In the June 7, 1903, St. Louis Globe-Democrat, contemporary composer Monroe H. Rosenfeld described The Entertainer as the best and most euphonious of Joplin's compositions to that point. It is a jingling work of a very original character, embracing various strains of a retentive character which set the foot in spontaneous action and leave an indelible imprint on the tympanum.

Suggested by the rag's dedication to James Brown and his Mandolin Club, author Rudi Blesh wrote that some of the melodies recall the pluckings and the fast tremolos of the little steel-stringed plectrum instruments. Stark issued an arrangement of the piece for two mandolins and a guitar.

A collection of Grade 3 & 4 pieces covering a variety of rhythms commonly encountered in the Boogie & Blues genre.

Rocking The Blues
This upbeat Grade 3 blues piece has an eighth note (quaver) LH walking bass pattern, with some staccato articulations in the RH. Eighth notes (quavers) should be played straight.

Jitterbug Boogie
This lively Grade 3 boogie was inspired by the swing dancers of the early 20th C. LH provides a driving walking bass while the RH plays syncopated rhythms and piano stabs.

Train Ride Boogie
This Grade 3 boogie has a familiar, popular chugging train style LH. The RH plays
blues scale patterns and syncopated rhythms. Eighth notes (quavers) should be swung.

1st Inversion Boogie
An upbeat Grade 3 piano boogie in the key of C Major. RH focuses on 1st inversion triads and is played over a steady walking bass. Attention to articulations and accents is needed to convey the jaunty character of this piece.

Chameleon Boogie
Inspired by the chameleons' unusual rocking movements when walking, this fairly lively Grade 3 boogie blues is based on a typical I IV V progression. Standard fingering for chromatic scales has been used for the turns. Eighth notes (quavers) should be lightly swung.

Jingle Bell Boogie
A lively, fun to play Grade 4 boogie arrangement of this popular Christmas carol. LH plays a fairly easy walking bass in the verse, before breaking into a well known boogie pattern for the chorus. LH needs to be relaxed, have flexibility and the ability to span the broken octaves comfortably.

Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 - 1st Movement, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. It has remained one of his most celebrated compositions. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named Grande sonate pathétique (to Beethoven's liking) by the publisher, who was impressed by the sonata's tragic sonorities. Prominent musicologists debate whether or not the Pathétique may have been inspired by Mozart's piano sonata K. 457, since both compositions are in C minor and have three very similar movements. The second movement, Adagio cantabile, especially, makes use of a theme remarkably similar to that of the spacious second movement of Mozart's sonata. However, Beethoven's sonata uses a unique motif line throughout, a major difference from Haydn or Mozart’s creation. This is the original Beethoven arrangement of this sonata., commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. The full title is CABBAGE and BEEF or Composing on St. Patrick's Day in the Time of the Coronavirus.  This was a fun exercise in writing a melody made up entirely of letters from the musical alphabet starting, of course, with CABBAGE and BEEF.  It was a fun thing to do as I was sheltering in place during the pandemic.  The challenge was composing a melody that made sense and harmonizing it nicely.  The time signature is 5/4 because these are uncommon times.  There are 13 words that make up the melody.  Can you find all of them?

Elizabeth Mikhadyuk decorates the music scores beautifully, with an artistry based on uncommon musical and emotional intelligence. This new piano album is designed for primary school pupils. The Editor gladly recommends that this Merry locomotive belong to the standard young pianist's repertoire.

The piano suite «Fairytales for Mathilde» was written in 2004 and is based on the themes of the fairytales by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). The suite is dedicated to Mathilde Hoogland on her birthday. It was presented for the first time on November 2004 in the Concert Hall «Mosterdzaadje» (The Netherlands) by Olga Beltiukova. It was also performed at the «E. Alterman International Competition for Young Pianists» (October 2005, Minsk, Belarus). Each of the 5 pieces refers to the original title and its unique character. Melodic freshness, lightness and elegance sparkle through. Technically speaking they are rather comfortable to play; the musical material is transparent in most cases, sometimes calling for a prevailing “glassy†resonance in the high register, which is very typical for the composer. Elizabeth Mikhadyuk decorates the music scores beautifully, with an artistry based on uncommon musical and emotional intelligence.
