It was filmed principally in Mexico. The score was composed by Elmer Bernstein, who would also score True Grit by the same director and starring John Wayne. Johnny Cash sang a song in 1965 also called The Sons of Katie Elder, written by Elmer Bernstein and Ernie Sheldon but, despite the title and composer, did not feature in this movie. Elmer Bernstein (April 4, 1922 – August 18, 2004) was an American composer and conductor. In a career that spanned over five decades, he composed some of the most recognizable and memorable themes in Hollywood history, including over 150 original film scores, as well as scores for nearly 80 television productions.  For his work he received an Academy Award for Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and Primetime Emmy Award. He also received seven Golden Globe Awards, five Grammy Awards, and two Tony Award nominations. Now for the first time, you can play this soaring music from the famous movie starring John Wayne.  This piano solo arrangement recreates all the drama from the movie.

My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Each of my arrangements is made for a specific student, so the results will vary in terms of playing level. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece. This arrangement was made for a mid/late beginner student working in Level 3 of Alfred's Masterwork Classics, Primary IV Class. There is a lot of jumping around, but a good student will handle it just fine and actually LOVE it. Get that initial right hand position with a 3rd between 2 and 3, and you'll be just fine. The triplet section can be tricky. Might be a great opportunity for practicing repeated notes with different fingers. Use the pedal for greatest effect, as notated.
