Pausing, I sat down to play one more time before I departed. At that point, I did not know how many months or years it would be until I had the blessing of playing the piano again. Feeling the smooth keys, I started to play this melody. As I added in the arpeggiating left hand, this piece became the bittersweet goodbye at that point in my life. I wrote this descriptive piece in particular for a student I was teaching, Elsa S., who ended up performing it on her Spring recital. Julia Muench currently resides on the piano faculty at the Monmouth Conservatory of Music (now under the Count Basie Theatre umbrella) in Red Bank, New Jersey, with a large student class.Her more recent musical activities besides composing, involve extensive piano teaching and giving piano recitals. The past two years, she has spent a good deal of time traveling in and out of the country. Italy and Chile have been among her destinations abroad. She performed a piano concert including her own composition, Nautilus Dances, as part of the Utopia Exhibit ( focusing on German Emigration to the US in the 1830's) in Washington DC's German Museum and at the Missouri history Museum in St. Louis, MO.Her latest piano concert in Red Bank, NJ featured composers Chopin, Debussy and Khatchaturian. The Pitcairn Islands are a remote British colony in the South Pacific, famous for being the site where the mutineers from the HMS Bounty landed. The islands’ population have always been very small (currently numbering around 50), yet, aside from the official anthem of God Save the King (which is not heard often on the islands), there have been, and continue to be, many unofficial anthems in use in the colony.In Diana Jolliffe Belcher’s 1871 book “The Mutineers of the Bounty and their Decendants in Pitcairn and Norfolk Island� it is reported that a local poem by Rev. G. H. Nobbs was set to the tune “Rousseau’s Dream� (sheet music) and was considered by Pitcairners to be their anthem at the time. It is not known for how long this was considered as their anthem, however. Also, in 1856, several Pitcairners resettled on Norfolk Island as Pitcairn had become too small. The local anthem now in use on Norfolk Island, Come Ye Blessed, is also referred to as the “Pitcairn Anthem�, and more than likely was brought to the island by the Pitcairn settlers, suggesting that this anthem was in use on Pitcairn at that time, and is also heard on Pitcairn currently.Currently, the song “We From Pitcairn Island� (to the tune of the hymn “The Royal Telephone�) is used as an unofficial anthem at gatherings and the like. It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they weren’t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on ‘God save the King’, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to ‘show the English what a blessing they have’ with that tune. We don’t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (‘Heil dir im Siegerkranz’).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

There is a short introduction, and enough repeats of the verses in case you would like to play or sing them all! While these recordings contain multiple verses, the print version (also available on Sheet Music Plus) contains only one verse with no introduction. All hymns are in a good vocal range except Christ the Lord is Risen Today which is in F to accommodate a more accessible playing range. The only hymn not included in this recording (that occurs in the print book) is Great is Thy Faithfulness, since I only have print publication rights to this piece. This is one large file, containing all 34 accompaniments. For this  reason, I have notated the cue point, i.e. the time in the recording when each hymn occurs so they can be located more easily within this one-hour and 10-minute recording.
