We credit Isaac Watts for helping to popularize “hymns� over “Psalms� in Protestant churches in the 18th Century. The texts of “Psalms� came directly from the Bible; “hymns� were more interpretive and reflective. Whether to allow the use of hymns rather than Psalms in church was a controversial topic of the 17th and 18th centuries! ♫ Watts used Psalm 96 and 98 with Genesis 3 to create the lyrics of Joy to the World. For over a hundred years, the lyrics were sung to various Psalm tunes. ♫ Lowell Mason published our current version with the melody ANTIOCH in 1848. He attributed the melody to George Frederick Handel by Lowell. We can find several fragments of this melody in Handel’s music, there is no complete statement of the melody in Handel. And so ANTIOCH is now attributed to Mason. ♫ The Hallelujah Chorus serves as the introduction and the conclusion of this arrangement. It was first published within Messiah, an oratorio by George Frederick Handel in 1741. The lyrics were created by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible. ♫ “The Lord is come� is the present perfect tense. It seems archaic, yet the present perfect tense has a distinct meaning. It points to a current action that is sustained. It isn’t just that Christ came in the past. The opposite of firm footing, stability, taking a stand is vacillating between ideas or chasing numerous ideas. ♫ I pictured the wind scattering leaves and debris, but failing to budge heavy objects, anchored to the ground. ♫ Our culture bids us chase after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills … The problem, of course is that the shelf life of the satisfaction that these things brings is very short. Chasing after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills, etc. is like is like chasing the wind. ♫ Portraying chasing the wind allowed me to use some contemporary classical composition techniques such as polymeter, polytonality, and deliberate dissonance. The first theme suggests the futility and inevitable frustration of chasing the wind. This exotic Late Intermediate Piano Solo calls for expressive playing. Indus was charted by Dutch explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman on their journeys to the East Indies. Cartographer Petrus Plancius placed it on his globe and Johann Bayer on his atlas. Indus represents the people the explorers encountered on their journeys. He stands in the southern hemisphere holding a spear. The Aeolian Dominant scale starts off major but ends with the minor scale. Or you can think of it as the Aeolian scale with a raised third, or Mixolydian with a lowered sixth. The major-minor juxtaposition gives it an exotic sound. It is used in Indian music where is is known as raga Charukesi.
