Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1458777). Tango for Glenn is a tribute to Glenn Gould, whose particular way of playing Bach on piano was so influential in its day. However, it's very much a joyful romp through a range of styles.The main theme is in 5/4 and it moves through a range of - mostly - irregular time-signatures, but uses a harmonic and melodic vocabluary strongly influenced by Bach, with lashings of some more jazzy language. There is a brief (two beat long) quote of Paul McCartney's song Blackbird used as thematic material in the second episode, the guitar part of which was also based on a piece by Bach. An interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) launched Gould's career as a renowned international pianist, and became one of the most well-known piano recordings.  Gould made another recording of the Goldberg in 1981, the year before his early death at 50, leaving the two Bach statements as bookends to his career, writes Michael Cooper at The New York Times.Known for being a specialist in Bach’s interpreter,  he described Bach as first and last an architect, a constructor of sound, and what makes him so inestimably valuable to us is that he was beyond a doubt the greatest architect of sound who ever lived.
