Behind a Smile came about while I was recording my third piano solo album in January 2023.  I took a break from the recording one afternoon and went on a walk with our dog. Not sure why, but I started thinking about people I know who keep smiling in front of others, even though they are crying on the inside.I guess we all go through periods like that, when we put on a brave face so that our children or people dependent on us are not burdened by our burdens, but there are some for whom this is the pattern of their daily lives. This simple piece is a tribute to them – maybe serving as a temporary catharsis to release the tears…and then help them smile again.More details about this piece and the album it feaures on here.

In this arrangement, I wanted to give a taste of our island through this carol, but as you can see, I took plenty of liberties in adding some ‘twists’ and colour to it. (Greensleeves) – Set to the tune of the English folk song, Greensleeves, this is one of my favourite carols musically, as it provides plenty of opportunities to add nuances in the accompanying chords and shifts between minor and major modes. I actually did this particular arrangement 30 years ago (!) in university days and performed it for a Christmas concert back then. More recently, our son played a simpler version of it for another mini concert. Last year, I released it in my Peaceful Christmas piano album and am delighted now to finally publish the score. This is a short piano piece that I wrote back in 1985, as a young teenager growing up in the country of Lebanon during the civil war. Initially, the piece was performed as a vocal/piano number and sung in Armenian. Over the years, it has been sung and played on various occasions. It's suitable for piano players of intermediate level and is ideal to be performed as a solo at the end of a concert. The music is calm with deep overtones and constantly changing chords and harmonies. Earlier this year, during one of the Covid-19 lockdowns in our country, I used the opportunity of being home to record a piano album, Peaceful. 'Tonight' is one of the songs on this album. You can find it on all online music platforms.
