By Roy Clark. By Charles Aznavour and Herbert Kretzmer. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Film/TV,Jazz,Multicultural,Singer/Songwriter,Standards,World. Score. 8 pages. Timothy Stapay #811114. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1213917).

Yesterday When I was Young is a song composed by Georges Garvarentz and written by Charles Aznavour and released in September 1964.  The original French title translates to Just yesterday or Not so long ago.

It is considered one of Aznavour's greatest hits.

The English-language lyrics, written by Herbert Kretzmer, tell of someone reflecting on his life, recalling how he had wasted his younger years.

Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
And only now I see how the years ran away

[Verse 2]
Yesterday, when I was young
So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung
So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out
I never stopped to think what life was all about
And every conversation I can now recall
Concerned itself with me, me and nothing else at all
[Verse 3]
Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play

[Outro]
There are so many songs in me that won't be sung
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday
When I was young
Young, young...

By 101 String Orchestra. By Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Broadway,Film/TV,Jazz,Musical/Show,Singer/Songwriter,Standards. Score. 10 pages. Timothy Stapay #823903. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1227903).

This arrangement of The Last Time I Saw Paris is written as played by piano artist, Liberace.  It contains an introduction, by Liberace, using parts of the French song, Clair De Lune by Claude Debussy.

The Last Time I Saw Paris is a song composed by Jerome Kern, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, published in 1940.  It was sung in the 1941 film Lady Be Good by Ann Sothern.

By December 1940, six versions of the song were on the charts, with Kate Smith having exclusive radio rights for the song for six weeks. The song catered to a wartime nostalgia for songs about European cities following the Second World War Battle of France (which brought Paris under Nazi control), with A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square also proving popular.

The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1941. This was Kern's second Academy Award for Best Original Song (following his success with The Way You Look Tonight in 1936), and Hammerstein's first.

Władziu Valentino Liberace(May 16, 1919 – February 4, 1987) was an American pianist, singer, and actor.  A child prodigy born in Wisconsin to parents of Italian and Polish origin, he enjoyed a career spanning four decades of concerts, recordings, television, motion pictures, and endorsements. At the height of his fame from the 1950s to 1970s, he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world!

Lyrics:

(Verse)
A lady known as Paris
Romantic and charming
Has left her old companions
And faded from view

Lonely men with lonely eyes are seeking her in vain
The streets are where they were
But there's no sign of her
She has left the Seine

(Chorus)
The last time I saw Paris
Her heart was warm and gay
I heard the laughter of her heart
In every street cafe

The last time I saw Paris
Hеr trees were dressеd for spring
And lovers walked beneath those trees
And birds had songs to sing

I dodged the same old taxicabs
That I had dodged for years
The chorus of their squeaking horns
Was music to my ears

The last time I saw Paris
Her heart was warm and gay
No matter how they change her
I'll remember her that way

I'll think of happy hours
And people who shared them
Old women selling flowers
In markets at dawn

(Bridge)
Children who applauded Punch and Judy in the park
And those who danced at night and kept our Paris bright
Till the town went dark

(Chorus)
The last time I saw Paris
Her heart was warm and gay
I heard the laughter of her heart
In every street cafe

The last time I saw Paris
Her trees were dressed for spring
And lovers walked beneath those trees
And birds had songs to sing

I dodged the same old taxicabs
That I had dodged for years
The chorus of their squeaking horns
Was music to my ears

The last time I saw Paris
Her heart was warm and gay
No matter how they change her
I'll remember her that way

By Brian McKnight. By Kim Gannon and Walter Kent. Arranged by Thomas Gunther. Christmas,Jazz,Latin. Score. 3 pages. Thomas Gunther Music Productions #906608. Published by Thomas Gunther Music Productions (A0.1317916).

About my solo piano arrangement of I'll Be Home For Christmas

My Solo Piano Arrangement of I'll Be Home For Christmas is written in a jazz-latin type style. I wrote it out note for note, and even included fingering and sustain pedal suggestions. I also included jazz chord symbols for those of you that either like to know what harmonies I was thinking, or want to add their own ideas based on those chords. The chords I used are pretty much based on the original harmony.

When I started out arranging for solo piano I was especially curious about how to create a latin groove underneath a melody. I studied bossa and samba music as well as cuban music for that. The rumba is a great style to start with. That's also the bases for this arrangement.

About the song I'll Be Home For Christmas

I have a very special relationship to this song. I first heard it after moving to the United States from Germany and spending my first Christmas in Chicago. On that Christmas Eve I was all alone for the first time, and when I turned on the radio this song came on. I don't easily cry, bad that was one of those moments when the floodgates just open up. It is such a sentimental song. And the closing lyrics I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams are just so emotional in this context.

Enjoy!

Could I Have This Dance is a song recorded by the Canadian country music artist Anne Murray. It was used in the 1980 film Urban Cowboy and appeared on both the Urban Cowboy soundtrack album for that film, as well as on the Anne Murray's Greatest Hits compilation album, issued in late 1980. Later on, it also appeared on Murray's 2007 album Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends, performed as a duet with Amy Grant.

As a single, it was released in August 1980 and became Murray's fifth number one country hit as a solo artist. It went to number one for one week and spent a total of ten weeks on the country chart.  Could I Have This Dance was also Murray's tenth Top 40 on the U.S. pop singles chart, peaking at number 33.  The song was written by Wayland Holyfield and Bob House.

Lyrics:

I'll always remember the song they were playin'
The first time we danced and I knew
As we swayed to the music and held to each other
I fell in love with you

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?

I'll always remember that magic moment
When I held you close to me
As we moved together, I knew forever
You're all I'll ever need

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?

A traditional country arrangement of the Hank Williams classic, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry is a song written and recorded by American country music singer-songwriter Hank Williams in 1949. The song has been covered by a wide range of musicians.

Williams was backed by members of the Pleasant Valley Boys: Zeke Turner (lead guitar), Jerry Byrd (steel guitar) and Louis Innis (rhythm guitar), as well as Tommy Jackson (fiddle) and Ernie Newton (bass).

Lyrics:

I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

[Verse 2]
I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hide its face and cry

[Verse 3]
Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die?
Like me, he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

[Verse 4]
The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

I am a Singaporean pianist and composer. I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee Tuan.

About Sky I & II

This set of short pieces is composed in 2013.

Sky I is a piece of chance music. This piece is composed using the I-Ching, which is one of the compositional tools by the famous US composer, John Cage. I chose a total of 37 out of the 64 notes for this piece, of which they are deduced from the hexagram in the I-Ching.

Sky II is a piece derived from Sky I, hence one can say Sky I is the fundamental of Sky II. The note values of Sky II are the opposite of Sky I. This means that a short note value in Sky I is actually represented in Sky II as a longer note value. the range of the notes in Sky II are translated accordingly to Sky I.

Sky I & II is dedicated to my piano teacher and uncle, Mr Joseph Toh.

Designed for those times when a short, musical interlude is needed, here is a 2-page, LARGE PRINT piano solo arrangement of the bright and dynamic hymn I Shall Know Him. In some hymnals, this song is titled My Savior First of All. This upbeat, powerful arrangement will fill its listeners with hope and courage and is a valuable addition to your church worship service repertoire.

This arrangement is one of the 7 songs in the collection
Hymns of Heaven. Each song in this collection was chosen because the lyrics talk about the joys of heaven.

Lyrics by Fanny Crosby:
Verse 1:
When my lifework is ended and I cross the swelling tide,
When the bright and glorious morning I shall see;
I shall know my Redeemer when I reach the other side,
And His smile will be the first to welcome me.

Chorus:
I shall know Him, I shall know Him,
And redeemed by His side I shall stand;
I shall know Him, I shall know Him
By the print of the nails in His hand.

Verse 2:
Oh, the soul-thrilling rapture when I view His blessed face,
And the luster of His kindly beaming eye;
How my full heart will praise Him for the mercy, love and grace,
That prepared for me a mansion in the sky.

Verse 3:
Thro' the gates to the city in a robe of spotless white,
He will lead me where no tears will ever fall;
In the glad song of ages I shall mingle with delight,
But I long to meet my Savior first of all.

Composed by Boothe Publishing. Arranged by Ashley Ivers. Pop. Accompaniment. Duration 183. Boothe Publishing #4633693. Published by Boothe Publishing (A0.1069966).

One of my auntie's got killed coming home from work late one evening by a drunk driver who was not obeying the traffic signals. I remember thinking to myself that this wasn't fair. It wasn't right. This was the first time that someone close to me was ushered out of this world. I started looking at my own life. Was I ready to leave this world behind? My auntie didn't get to decide. One moment she was here. The next she was gone, leaving her children behind. As I looked at myself I noticed there were a lot of flaws in my character. I liked some things about myself, however, there were a lot of other character traits where I felt that I was lacking in integrity and honesty. The question, What am I doing here? made me want to correct those flaws so that I could feel good about meeting God when I leave this world. I have found that change is possible.

This arrangement of I'll Be Seeing You is written as performed by legendary piano artist, Liberace.  It's based on a rare piano solo version rather than thevocal version, that Liberace would often sing on his shows.

I'll Be Seeing You is a popular song about missing a loved one, with music by Sammy Fain and lyrics by Irving Kahal.   Published in 1938, it was inserted into the Broadway musical Right This Way, which closed after fifteen performances. The title of the 1944 film I'll Be Seeing You was taken from this song at the suggestion of the film's producer, Dore Schary. The song is included in the film's soundtrack.

Lyrics:

I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces all day through
In that small cafe, the park across the way
The children's carousel,
The chestnut trees, the wishing well

I'll be seeing you in every lovely summer's day
In everything that's light and gay
I'll always think of you that way

I'll find you in the morning' sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you
I'll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you.

I Only Have Eyes For You is a romantic love song by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubins; here arranged for piano solo and as a tribute to my favorite actress, Bette Davis.  Who can ever forget those fabulous eyes.

A recording of the song by Art Garfunkel was a number-one hit on the UK Singles Chart in October 1975 for two weeks.  In the US, the song reached number 18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Lyrics:

My love must be a kind of blind love
I can't see anyone but you
And dear, I wonder if you find love
An optical illusion, too?

Are the stars out tonight?
I don't know if it's cloudy or bright
'Cause I only have eyes for you, dear
The moon may be high
But I can't see a thing in the sky
'Cause I only have eyes for you

I don't know if we're in a garden
Or on a crowded avenue
You are here, so am I
Maybe millions of people go by
But they all disappear from view
And I only have eyes for you.

Composed by Reimund Merkens. 20th Century. Score. 14 pages. Reimund Merkens #5899655. Published by Reimund Merkens (A0.910925).

This is a composition I wrote for the Diabelli Composition Contest in 2014. The task for the composers was to compose a musical piece with different variations and styles based on a given rhythmical theme which is build by the morse code of I-R-I-N-I. IRINI is a greek word and means peace.

The morse code is ( * is a short note, - means a long note ):

* *  * - *  * *  - *  * *

I    R      I    N    I

In my composition I use different musical styles (baroque, classical, romantic, modern) and different musical themes as well to express my understanding of piece on earth. The rhythm of IRINI can always be heard in the background. The piece ends the same as it starts.

Composed by Janice Kapp Perry. Arranged by Mark Gubler. Children,Christian,New Age,Religious,Sacred. Score. 5 pages. Mark Gubler #896486. Published by Mark Gubler (A0.1307229).

The gospel of Jesus Christ is simple. We are commanded to love God and everyone around us. All the other commandments are given to point us to these two great commandments.

In this arrangement the music surrounding the lyrics love one another as Jesus loves you keeps coming back throughout. It represents that though we may get distracted by all the things that we feel we should be doing, there is power in always returning and centering our lives around loving as Jesus loves.

Song Lyrics
1. I’m trying to be like Jesus;
I’m following in his ways.
I’m trying to love as he did,
in all that I do and say.
At times I am tempted to make a wrong choice,
But I try to listen as the still small voice whispers,
“Love one another as Jesus loves you.
Try to show kindness in all that you do.
Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,
For these are the things Jesus taught.â€
2. I’m trying to love my neighbor;
I’m learning to serve my friends.
I watch for the day of gladness when Jesus will come again.
I try to remember the lessons he taught.
Then the Holy Spirit enters into my thoughts, saying:
“Love one another as Jesus loves you.
Try to show kindness in all that you do.
Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,
For these are the things Jesus taught.â€.

About the arrangement

This is pianist/arranger Thomas Gunther's beautiful and highly accurate piano solo arrangement of the 2023 Barbie Movie features Billie Eilish's song WHAT I WAS MADE FOR.  It includes even Billie's quiet humming passages.
This solo piano version can be played all by itself, or with Billie's recording of the song.
It is easy enough to learn for pianists that have no amazing techniqual skills, but can be challanging in different ways, as explained below.

From the Arranger Thomas Gunther

The most challenging task when writing this solo piano arrangement of What I Was Made For was to notate Billie's rhythm accurately. Her melodic rhythm is very important as it supports the flow of the lyrics perfectly. Notating a singer's rhythm can unfortunately never be 100% perfect (notation is by definition quantized), but I think I got very close.
An other challenge was to get the accompaniment sound like the original without stepping on the melody notes.
Looking at my final version I think it is as good as it gets for a piano adaption of this highly emotional song.
I really hope all you Billie Eilish fans out there will enjoy playing this arrangement!

How difficult is it

As mentioned earlier, the song looks simple, but to play it well there is a lot of things the pianist has to take care of. The most challenging aspect is to sustain some notes by either using clever fingering or employing the sustain pedal. Also, dynamics are really important, especially when ballancing the accompaniment against the melody.

Fingering

I included fingering numbers to give the pianist a starting point. But fingering is a highly subjective affaire. Every pianist should feel free to adapt her/his own fingering as see fit.

Sustain pedal usage

The sustain pedal usage is very important in this arrangement (I included sustain pedal markings for this very reason). For one, it helps sustaining some notes that can't be held otherwise, and of course to make the sound fuller (more cinematic). It is important to use the pedal to create a sense of space (distance). After all, the original recording uses a lot of reverb to achieve that.

Chord Symbols

I did not include pop chord symbols because the harmony to the the song is very simple and based around 4 diatonic chords. It would just cludder up the score. At PopJazzKeys.com/Barbie I talk a little bit about the chords.

I love to tell the story, because I know ‘tis true; it satisfies my longings as nothing else can do.
