Published by Upstream Music (A0.933520). There are many more unfinished than completed compositions of Beethoven that have been preserved. ln these fragments one sees ideas for individual works. A large number of sketchbooks and sketches from the composer were preserved and are housed in libraries and private collections all over the globe. Some sketches are no more than brief experiments or short elaborated ideas, but there are also fragments preserved that nearly give us a complete picture of a composition. In the so-called Kafka sketchbook, which was published in 1970 in London, approximately 500 fragments of manuscripts were bundled that stem from 1786 - 1799. The Fantasia Sonata in D (deest 45) for piano forte in three parts, was hidden in the archives since 1792. This sonata of the young Beethoven, with striking similarities to the Moonlight sonata and the Pastorale has never been performed on stage. Young pianotalent Martin Oei played it for the first time in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, October 21st, 2012. The large, over 1100 bars comprising torso now known as Fantasia Sonata in D from 1792, cannot be called a sketch anymore, although Beethoven has not completed the work and used many ideas in other, later works. The reconstruction of the sketches was done by the Dutch Beethoven musicologist and composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The piece was probably written in Bonn, three years before he started to write his first official piano sonata of a series of 32 sonatas. In November 1792 Beethoven went from Bonn to Vienna to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Beethoven rapidly proceeded to make his mark as a brilliant keyboard performer and as a gifted young composer with a number of works to his credit. In 1795 his first mature published works appeared, and his career was officially launched. Striking harmonies The re-using of previously drafted material is quite common in Beethoven's works. Apparently the material wasn't yet ripe enough at the time of its origination, or perhaps Beethoven changed his mind with regards to the new composition. This could very well be so regarding the torso from Kafka’s sketchbook that we now call the Piano Fantasia sonata in D. This piece contains 1100 bars of music, not taking into account the alternative bars. The piece is composed by Beethoven in 1792 - 1793 and was set up as a tripartite sonata in D with remarkable abnormalities in terms of form and content. There are striking harmonies that cannot be found in other works composed in that same period. It’s possible that the composer didn’t have the courage to publish it or that indeed the time was not yet ripe for it. Finally the composer let the draft go and never came back to it. Or did he? Thematic similarities We find phrases in several later works that share similarities with ideas and themes from Fantasia sonata in D. The first part of Fantasia sonata has the same theme as the trio of the third movement of Symphony no. 7 (in A Major Opus 92). Even the key and also the rhythm in 3/4 time are the same. This cannot be a coincidence. Similar mood and thematic parallels can be found in the Pastorale, the Sonata for piano no. 15 (Opus 28): it is striking that this piece is also composed in D and in 3/4 time. We find similar dramatic expression in the Sonata for piano no. I 7 in d minor Opus 31 no. 2. The second movement of the Fantasia sonata nearly has the same theme as the second movement of the Sonata for piano no. 23 in minor (the Appassionato Opus 57). Martin Oei, Daiel Wayenberg, Cees Nieuwenhuizen at The World Premiere in The Concertgebouw Beethoven begins the third movement of the Fantasia sonata with the main theme of the first movement, but now in e minor. lts appearance in minor is an entirely new idea. Nevertheless Beethoven doesn't elaborate the idea any further because it disappears after 29 bars. Now a new agitated theme starts in d minor, which was announced in the first movement, but now reappears in its complete.

I shared it with my modal and tonal counterpoint instructor, Professor Richard Wilson, and he responded favorably to my venturesome modulations and use of the Neapolitan chord. Similar to my first invention in A minor, the motive is announced by the upper voice before it is restated an octave lower by the lower voice in bar 2 to form a stretto. In bar 3, the middle voice states the motive in the dominant key of A minor with the lower and upper voices playing the first and second countermotives respectively. An episode ensues and arrives at a half cadence in bar 8. The opening fragment of the motive is exploited in conjunction with a pedal tone and a variant of the second countermotive to navigate through a series of contrasting keys. At bar 14, the motive is reasserted in F-sharp minor layered over itself in stretto with a C-sharp pedal tone in bar 15. The voices from the episode in bars 5-8 are reshuffled in bars 18-21 as another exercise in invertible counterpoint. In measure 16, the motive and two countermotives are reprised in C-sharp minor, a half step below the tonic key. Starting in bar 18, the episode from bars 6-8 is reprised in F-sharp minor with the first and second countermotives exchanging positions. This is followed in bars 16-27 by a varied restatement of the episodic sequence from bars 8-17 that cadences in bar 27 before a restatement of the subject in bar 28 in G minor with slightly embellished countermotives. Bars 32-35 present a restatement of the episode from bars 5-8 with the motive relocated to the lower voice and the two countermotives in intimate proximity in the two upper voices. An unexpected descending scale in a series of compound harmonic 10ths forms an inversion of the second half of the motive and sets the stage for a perfect cadence to a Picardy Third in D major. After so many years, I remain especially pleased with the effect of that ending.

The motive is intriguing as the first twelve notes are immediately followed by their inversion after a drop of a seventh to form a contrapuntal palindrome. This inversion is followed by an octave leap upwards to D that circles back to the starting note C. In bar 3, the lower voice introduces the motive a fourth lower at the dominant as the upper voice states the countermotive which concludes in bar 4 with an augmented tonal version of the descending scale run from the original motive. The ensuing episode in bars 5-8 is constructed from fragments of the motive in the upper voice accompanied by an embellished form of the countermotive in the lower voice. A series of ascending broken thirds accompanied by a rising scale run cadences in the tonic key of C minor in bar 10 before abruptly redirecting to G minor in bar 11. At this juncture, the motive and countermotive are restated in their inversions. The episodic sequence from bars 5-9 is also stated in an inverted form in bars 13-17. In bar 18, the motive is stated by the upper voice in G minor with the countermotive now in the lower voice. This formula is repeated a whole step lower in F minor in bars 20-21 followed by the modulation sequence from bars 5-8 reprised with the voices exchanging places. In bar 27, a cadence in F minor redirects back to C major in bar 28 followed by a modulation sequence culminating in C minor in bar 30 that cadences to a final Picardy Third in bar 32.

Élegié in E Flat Minor for solo piano (Classical Music for Tablet Series) ♫ by Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (Opus 3.1) ♫ Rachmaninoff (born in 1873) , Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor, was considered one of the finest pianists of his day. His compositions belong to the Romantic period of music history. He graduated at the Moscow Conservatory in 1892. After the premiere of his First Symphony in 1897, the negative reaction by an important critic sent him into a tailspin of depression that lasted several years. ♫ In 1909 he performed a series of 26 performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the USA. In 1914 he travelled to England for a concert tour. ♫ In February 1917 on the day the Socialist Revolution began in St Petersburg, he performed a benefit piano recital in Moscow for wounded Russian soldiers. When he returned home, he found that a group of Social Revolutionary Party members had seized his property as their own communal property. He had invested most of his earnings on the estate, but left it behind. Rachmaninoff's concert performance in Yalta on 5 September 1917 was to be his last in Russia. The chaos and tension of the October Revolution was daunting. He composed with the noise of gunshots and rallies in the background. He received an invitation to perform 10 recitals across Scandinavia. He accepted the offer, using it as an excuse to obtain permits so he and his family could flee Russia. ♫ He returned to the USA in November 1918 and America became his home. When he became an American citizen in 1943, Sergei Rachmaninoff said: “This is the only place on earth where a human being is respected for what he is and what he does, and it does not matter who he is and where he came from.†He died in March 1943 from cancer at the age of 70. The first is the Élegié in E Flat Minor, the second is the Prelude in C# Minor (one of his most famous piano compositions). This opus was finished in 1892, when he was 19 years old. Diatonic Waltz Program Notes: The Intonatione In the Whole-Tone Scale recalls the Renaissance Italian musical form that evolved into the prèlude in later organ music, as well as the use of Italian forms in the atonal music of Arnold Schoenberg, and some neo-Baroque composers of the twentieth century. In contrast, the whole-tone scale is reminiscent of generally tonal composers, including Debussy. The Martial Prèlude and Nocturne in Modes recalls the many pre-twentieth century pairings of preludes with fugues and other forms. The pairing with a nocturne evokes an air of Romanticism. The Martial Prèlude is a march-like fanfare, in Lydian mode on C. The Chopinesque Nocturne is in Phrygian mode, on E flat. An Impression of Impressionism evokes some of Debussy’s Preludes pour Piano, including a suggestive title at the bottom of the page, as Debussy himself did. For the young pianist aiming to master the works of Debussy, the arpeggio patterns, block chords, and sequential motives will prove helpful as introductory exercises. An Imitation of Roy Harris was inspired by the occasion in 1976 when James Siddons heard Roy Harris speaking in person about his compositions. Siddons was impressed by Harris’ youth in Oklahoma, and how the solidity of American rural life shaped Harris’ symphonic music. When taking questions at the end of the lecture, a young composer asked Harris about his creative methods when composing music. Well, Harris responded, You don’t pull up a potato just to see if its growing. Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting Meters is a technical exercise that is nonetheless fun to listen to, and fun to play. A student pianist should be asked to analyze the harmony in this piece, and to describe what shifts are taking place when the musical meter (as well as phrasing and rhythm patterns) change. The echoes of Stravinsky and Bartók should be apparent to the listener and pianist. Ragtime was not regarded as art music of the same caliber as Stravinsky and Schoenberg, or even Copland and Gershwin, until the 1970s. The inclusion of ragtime in these seven pieces would not have been accepted by composers of the early twentieth century, Stravinsky excepted. Ragtime Bitonality explores how such piano music might have sounded had major composers of the 1900-1920 era taken an interest in its march-like vitality. There is even a touch of atonality! In contrast to the powerful rhythms and juxtaposed tonal relations in much early twentieth-century music, there were works by many composers that continued familiar melodic patterns and balanced forms, offering musical relief in a turbulent era in music history. The Diatonic Waltz is offered here as a quiet, peaceful conclusion to our tour of musical styles in classical music of a century ago. Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

At the Plaza A Holiday in Naples is a five-movement programmatic work for solo piano composed in 2021 by Andrei Hadap. Composed in the late nineteenth century style, it depicts a lone traveller, on holiday, who explores the city of Naples in the same period. Each movement is a short scene that narrates the traveller’s experience during his visit through music. The first movement, At the Carnival, in sonata form, begins with a slow introduction as the traveller sets foot at the pier in the morning. The main allegro begins as he hears the carnival from a distance and proceeds to explore, represented by the scherzando-like figures. Short episodes of tranquillity interrupt the carnival as the traveller, in a reverie, looks out to admire the Neapolitan coastline. The piece ends as the carnival fades out into the distance. Contrasting with the festivities, the traveller encounters A Merchant at the Spinning Wheel, the title of the second movement. This encounter depicts the reality of the poverty-stricken region at the time. Here, the merchant is depicted in a trance-like state, as the monotonous arpeggiated figures at the piano are heard throughout. Later in the piece, we hear the agitated merchant spinning the wheel faster, distracted by the carnival, but eventually calms down towards the end. The third movement, In the Ballroom, the traveller enters a ballroom, observing the dancers from a distance. He finds himself drawn to a young woman, though slightly nervous, whom he invites to dance. In the middle section, we hear the awkwardness between them as they both stumble frequently. Eventually, he regains his composure and the two dance well into the evening. In the fourth movement At the Opera, the traveller then goes to a nearby opera house where he walks in during a love duet between a tenor and soprano. The final movement At the Plaza, the traveller encounters the carnival once again. This time, they are dancing a tarantella, a Neapolitan folk dance depicting the involuntary muscle spasms from a venomous spider bite. The traveller joins in and dances with them until sunrise.

M.H. DuncanMartha Hill Duncan’s passion for music started early, inspired by her mother, who sang and played the piano by ear. Martha was a member of the first graduating class of the Houston High School for Performing and Visual Arts and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin.Her piano works have been inspired, at least in part, by her long-time career as a piano teacher and some of these pieces, as well as her art songs, appear in educational publications and syllabi. Piano collection titles include The Sunken Garden, Isla Vista Suite, Precipitations, Angular Measures, Limestone Etchings, Rainy Days and Cottage Days. Since moving from the United States to Canada, many of her compositions have been inspired by Canadian landscapes and texts. In January 2014, her youth opera, Searching the Painted Sky, with poet/librettist Janet Windeler Ryan, was premiered at the National Opera Association Convention in New York City. She was named a finalist for the 2020 Louis Applebaum Award.A former piano examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is also a founding member of Red Leaf Pianoworks, a self-publishing composers’ collective. Originally from Houston, Texas, Martha and her husband Martin have lived in Kingston, Ontario since 1988. She also conducts the women’s choir She Sings! and has two grown children and two granddaughters. As a child, his biggest question was, “What would happen if...?†His first experiments involved creating foul-smelling concoctions with his chemistry set in hisparents’ basement. He survived and went on to complete an Honours Physics degree at McGill University, followed by graduate degrees in astronomy at the Universities of Toronto and Texas at Austin. Post-doctoral research was performed at Cornell University, the University of Toronto and the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1988, he became a professor of astronomy and physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.In his academic career he has co-authored over 120 scientific papers, which have been cited over 8,000 times. He has presented numerous invited talks at international scientific conferences and has been the guest speaker at many public lectures. His research has ranged from the study of black holes to simulations of the formation and orbital evolution of planets and comets. He is best known for the prediction of the existence of a disk of small icy bodies beyond Neptune, which he and his colleagues called the Kuiper Belt. In 1996, the International Astronomical Union named Asteroid 6115 “martinduncan†in honor of his contributions to planetary dynamics.

Kansas’s acoustic hit “Dust In The Wind” is a reflective song about the inevitability of mortality and the insignificant role every person plays in the bigger picture. It was written by guitarist Kerry Livgren, who was inspired by a Native American poem containing the line “For all we are is dust in the wind”.The music came from a picking exercise he was doing that his wife suggested he make a song out of. It was the last addition to the album. “Dust In The Wind” was a top 10 hit in the US and Canada in the spring of 1977 and remains the biggest hit of their career. Benjamin Franklin was also a frequent vistor and Madame Brillon has an extensive correspondence with him, including the period after his stay in Paris during the American Revolution .Many of her compositions were purchased in 1957 by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, in honor of this friendship.In 2021, French Pianist Nicolas Horvath recorded a landmark CD for Grand Piano (GP872-73) of Brillon’s keyboard noatas with extensive notes by Aliette de Laleu, Deborah Hayes and Nicolas Horvath and Christine de Pas The keyboard sonatas published here are intended to document this reocrding.The twelve numbered sonatas, marked “Troisième Recueil de Sonates pour le pianoforte ou clavecin avec accompagnement d’un viiolon ad libitumâ€, are in the hand of a copyist and are contained in a bound volume labeled as her Troisième Recueil (‘Third Collection’) and dedicated to Mesdemoiselles Brillon. Crossed-out measures and partially abbreviated notation indicate that t was for her own use in salon performances. This is probably an early work, given the classical haronic vocabulary and typical classical balance of the forms.   The second movement is more virtuosic, with an initial theme in four octaves, scales in doubled thirds and figures which are in alternate hands.
