I would suggest have the student reviewing staccato notes and have them practice that for several measures. This will build up muscle memory and control needed for playing the entire song. Maybe practice hands alone, practice scales in staccoto or using a timed exercise to see how long the students can play staccato notes that sound good. Enjoy!
