This is an up tempo Stride piano version of Namely You. The song comes from the musical and film 'Li'l Abner' a spoof about hillbillies. It was written in 1956. I take the tune through the 3 keys of Bb, B and C major. The left hand is sometimes a little bit tricky in Stride piano but the tenths can be played in single notes or octaves or can be 'rolled' if the hands are not large enough.I don't include fingering or dynamics in my pieces and prefer to leave these up to the individual pianist as no two piano teachers ever agree on these things. I do include chord symbols as I find these the most useful in learning and memorising music. Many people have recorded this tune including Diana Dors, Carmen Macrae, Sonny Rollins, Fred Hersch etc. It is, though, perhaps less well known than other jazz standards but is nontheless a wonderfully melodic tune. For me, it works very well. Elton himself was well versed in honky tonk, pub piano styles and the chord progression is very accepting of this treatment. If some of the voicings ie 10ths are too large for your left hand simply play single bass notes or octaves instead, or feel free to roll the tenths. Please note this is a piano solo and I haven't notated any of the other instruments in my YouTube arrangement. I do, however, write my arrangements for solo piano first and they sound perfect as such. I don't include fingering, phrasing or dynamic marking as no two piano teachers will agree upon so I leave this trustingly to the individual performer. I do include chord symbols which I find more helpful in learning repertoire.Have fun playing this. I did. I'm a big Elton John fan and this is one of my favourite numbers of his and it was a pleasure to notate it.

It is a cheerful waltz but quite schmaltzy and nostalgic too. I take it through the 2 keys of F major and Gb major. I do use 10ths quite a bit in my playing but they can easily be replaced with single bass notes or octaves as required.I don't indicate pedaling, fingering or dynamics as no two piano teachers ever agree on such things and I prefer to entrust the tunes interpretation to the individual pianist. Likewise the suggested tempo is not written in stone.I enjoyed writing this waltz and hope it brings a similar pleasure to anyone who learns to play it.

It's a very cheerful, joyous upbeat tune which is hopefully intended to get toes tapping. It's one of my personal favourites from the tunes I have composed.

I was suprised I could still do it and I've kept composing ever since. The tune sounds vaguely classical and has a number of trills in the melody which add something. The harmony is a little jazzy in places so it's a bit of a mixed genre. I felt it would make an excellent theme tune for some film or programme. It goes in key from A major at the beginning to C major at the end with a touch of minor along the way. I don't notate dynamics, fingering and pedals as I prefer to leave this up to the individual pianist and no two teacher ever agree on these subjects. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did writing and arranging it.

I picked her up from the dog pound and had 10 lovely years with her. I wrote the piece as I only had one photograph of her, I lost many photographs whilst moving house recently. When I first got her camera's on mobile phones didn't exist and I wasn't a keen photographer. Having only one image it made me nostalgic so I decided to write a tune. So instead of having memories in terms of photographs now I've got a musical one to go with the images in my head. It's a happy tune as she was a happy dog that made me laugh many times. It's written in an old fashioned piano style known as 'Stride Piano' which has it's roots in the ragtime of Scott Joplin and found it's peak in the piano stylings of the great Fat's Waller in the 'Roaring Twenties'. The British pianist Russ Conway has some bearing on my style which adds a bounce in the form of reverse 10ths.My notation is simple, I haven't added fingerings or dynamic marks. The tempo mark is only a guide. I do include chord symbols which I often find are the best aide to sight reading. It's a tricky style to master but extra notes in the bass can be left out and single notes alternating with chords will suffice. Hope you enjoy playing it.Please note this is a piano solo only and the other instruments featured in my YouTube video are not notated.

I wrote it as a sort of etude to collate a lot of blues licks and get them all under my fingers but it is still quite a catchy composition with strong melodic content.There is a key change somewhere in the middle from C to Db which perhaps complicates it a little but I think it gives it a real lift and stops any blues fatigue setting in!It's a fun piece which I hope you enjoy learning and playing.NB. As usual the left hand can be simplified by playing any 10ths as single notes or octaves. Bass notes can often be played an octave higher to lessen the distance stretched. I don't notate dynamics, pedal or fingering as I prefer to leave such issues to the discretion of the individual pianist. Teachers, in any event, can never agree on these things. It was written for the Noel Gay show 'The Little Dog Laughed'. It's a fun song that apparently was one of Winston Churchill's favourites. So my arrangement is a tribute to Bud, Chesney and Winston!My version features a left hand stride piano/ragtime style and goes through the keys of C and F major. There are lots of stride idioms and riffs in the right hand from the likes of Scott Joplin, Fats Waller and early jazz styles as well as popular pianists such as Russ Conway and Winnifred Attwell. If you have problems with the 10ths in the bass just play octaves or single bass notes instead or possibly 'rolling' or 'bouncing' them ie playing one note and jumping as quickly as possible to the next so as to play almost simultaneously.I don't notate dynamics, fingering or pedalling and prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist as no two teachers ever agree on such matters.Hope you have as much fun playing it as I did arranging it.
