Then Nature Breathed

During the international pandemic lockdown of 2020, I was living in Perthshire, Scotland. I am a keen road and hill runner, and I often find solitude, fitness, and mental rejuvenation in the foothills of the Ochils. Perthshire is a beautiful place to run.

Due to the lack of planes and cars, I was amazed at the sudden abundance of animals and plant growth which appeared quite suddenly during that spring and summer. I felt that nature was thanking us for a brief pause in our frantic lifestyles, where we belch emissions and pollute our souls, minds and the planet in a frantic rush to feed our lust for materialism. I feel that many people (myself included) were able to stop, reflect and re-evaluate our roles in our lives.

Also known as “A Day In The Life Of A Fool,� and “Manha de Carnival,� the song was first introduced in the movie “Black Orpheus in 1959. It’s one of the first jazz tunes that many players learn.  Killer Joe is among the eight standards written by Benny Golson for the jazz repertoire. The song was written in 1954 and first appeared on the album entitled Flyin' Home by the jazz vibraphonist Lionel Hampton. The song had its premiere in 1954 during the composer's stint with Lionel Hampton's big band.

Thanks, John.  Whisper Not is a composition by Benny Golson. It is in a minor key and contains a shout chorus (a special chorus between the final solo and the closing head). It quickly became popular with other musicians: Thad Jones and Morgan recorded their own versions before its composer had the chance to record it with his own group. Golson's early version was on his 1957 album Benny Golson's New York Scene. By 1960, John S. Wilson, critic at The New York Times, had labelled the song, together with another Golson composition, I Remember Clifford, an established part of the jazz repertory. It has been recorded by hundreds of musicians, becoming a jazz standard.

This advanced-intermediate arrangement of the energetic R&B classic can be programmed for advanced piano students' concerts and recitals, as a change of pace from standard piano literature.

This arrangement seeks to emulate the recording, implying guitar lines, vocal lines, and so forth. The 8va designation that appears beneath the bass clef indicates that the bass line should be played an octave lower (sometimes marked on scores as 8vb).

It is essential to listen to the original recording in order to make sense of what might otherwise seem odd considered in light of traditional voice-leading practice.

The duration of this abbreviated arrangement is approximately 3:35.
