The Raising of Lazarus, for Piano composed in 1987

The Inspiration

The music is an impressionistic work based on the biblical miracle. For me a miracle that stands alone portraying the all encompassing power of Jesus while demonstrating his unequivocal compassion. 

The Music

Composed in 1987 which beyond its inspiration from the miracle was clearly influenced by Debussy and Ravel. The opening bars depict Lazarus lost in some unknown realm; confused and alone. At measure 22 Jesus has arrived and will do what no one else can; bring life from death. At measure 49 Lazarus emerges from the tomb and Jesus moves on; ever closer to his own death and resurrection.

The recording is a midi recording using the sibelius notation software. After using Encore for 30 years I decided to move onto new scoring software. I found it quite workable.

Fantasy No. 1, for Piano composed in 1980

The Inspiration

Early in my music studies the piece reflects the various music styles I was studying in preparation for College. I played this at my College entrance audition in 1982 and would perform it many times thereafter.

The Music

Composed in 1980-1982 influences of Debussy, Ravel and Rachmaninoff can be heard. The recording is from 1987 with the composer performing at a small college in New Hampshire. The performance is a bit rushed though reflects the intent of the piece.

The Inspiration

The music is an impressionistic work based on a landscape painting by Joanne Springfield Longley. The painting, which is the first page of this piece, depicts the field where she grew up as a young woman and which is now the location of our home. A beautiful piece of art capturing the forest as the sun set in East Derry, NH.

Composed in 1985 which beyond its inspiration from the painting was clearly influenced by Debussy's La cathédrale engloutie. The recording is from 1987 with the composer performing at a small college in New Hampshire.

Toccata Number 1 was composed in 1988. Heavily influenced by Ravel, Debussy and Block it is one of my favorite compositions for Piano. The performance is from 1988 at Notre Dame College. My playing is a bit rushed but gives an overall impression of the piece. Note that at page 9 there are alternate measures that can be found at the end. In my performance I played the alternate measures.

Exodus of Kobol, for Piano was composed in 2011

The Inspiration

Being a long time fan of the Battle Star Galactica science fiction series, inspired Exodus of Kobol. According to Colonial scriptures Kobol was the birthplace and original home of humanity where humans lived with their gods, the Lords of Kobol. Due to over population, waste, natural disasters and an undetermined conflict, humans fled the planet and founded the twelve colonies. According to legend there was a thirteenth colony called Earth. All this ultimately an attempt at new beginnings.

The Music

The piece is essentially in ABA format. The opening melody, haunting in nature, is contrasted by a driving left hand accompaniment which leads into a melancholy B section of picturesque chords; a variation on a portion of the opening melody. The A section then returns dramatically in an unexpected harmonic change followed by an energetic but somewhat unearthly ending. Impressionism influences are obvious throughout the piece.

Cafe Terrace II for Piano, composed in June of 2007 was the second in a set of 3 pieces inspired by Vincent van Gogh's Café Terrace at Night. Like Cafe Terrace I it depicts the quiet conversations, the laughing, the crying, and the arguments, van Gogh may have observed while conceiving his masterpiece. The music begins with a very soft melancholy melody which slowly moves from its reserved beginning to a place of frenzy and intensity. This storm so to speak continues for a period of time and then finally reaches a reserved climax with the fury subsiding; ushering in a return to the opening melody which repeats in its entirety and then comes to a reverent ending.

Cafe Terrace I for Piano, composed in August of 2006 was the first in a set of 3 pieces inspired by Vincent van Gogh's Café Terrace at Night. The music's underlying idea attempts to depict the laughing, the crying, the arguments and the quiet conversations van Gogh may have observed while conceiving his masterpiece. It begins in a flutter of excitement demonstrating the commotion of the Cafe at its busiest hour. As the piece progresses the musics character slowly changes. Moving towards a more agitated state it finally descends to the lower register of the piano, depicting a verbal conflict. This conflict eventually resolves and returns to the opening music which then leads to the exuberant ending.

Cafe Terrace III for Piano, composed in September of 2009 was the third in a set of 3 pieces inspired by Vincent van Gogh's Café Terrace at Night. This piece unlike the first two, was composed to celebrate the grandeur van Gogh must have felt at the conclusion of his masterpiece, as he stepped back a final time to look at his painting and then the Cafe. In a sense the music celebrates all the events as they flashed across his inner eye . The piece opens with a majestic melody weaving through secondary ideas as the piece progress's, only to return to the opening melody and then conclude in a glorius fashion.
