Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1391832 Composed by George Gershwin. Arranged by Anastasio Rossi. Broadway,Musical/Show,Pop,Singer/Songwriter,Standards. Score. 2 pages. Anastasio Rossi #975233. Published by Anastasio Rossi (A0.1391832). “Someone to Watch Over Me” is one of the Gershwins’ most iconic songs, written by Ira for his wife Leonore in commemoration of their marriage on September 14, 1926. The song made its Broadway debut in the hit musical Oh, Kay! (1926). The musical featured Victor Moore as Jimmy and Gertrude Lawrence as Kay. Even though the show as a whole was wildly popular, Gertrude Lawrence’s rendition of “Someone to Watch Over Me” was the show’s big hit.Someone to Watch Over Me was written by George Gershwin initially as a fast and jazzy up-tempo rhythm tune – marked scherzando (playful) in the sheet music – but in the 1930s and 1940s it was recorded by singers in a slower ballad form, which became the standard. The definitive slow torch song version was first released by Lee Wiley in 1939, followed by Margaret Whiting in 1944.This arrangement as a Piano Solo, Is in the slower ballad tempo. Where the embellishments are intricate, suggested fingerings are included in the score.

Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1398436 By Bobby Darin. By Albert Lasry, Charles Trenet, and Jack Lawrence. Arranged by Tobi A Crawford. Contemporary,Jazz. Score (Chords/Lyrics). 7 pages. Tobi Crawford #981711. Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1398436). This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea” over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,” and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.” It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables” and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson and Sara Gazarek improvise on ballads for inspiration.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1260428 By Les Baxter. By Jack Lawrence, Marguerite Monnot, and Rene Gustave Rouzaud. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Broadway,Film/TV,Multicultural,Musical/Show,Singer/Songwriter,Standards,World. Score. 4 pages. Timothy Stapay #853593. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1260428). The Poor People Of Paris is arranged as played by piano artist, Liberace.  It was often used by Liberace as part of medley of songs about Paris; and in concerts around the world.   The Poor People of Paris is a US pop song that became a number-one instrumental hit in 1956. It is based on the French language song La goualante du pauvre Jean (The Ballad of Poor John), with music by Marguerite Monnot and words by René Rouzaud.  Edith Piaf had one of her biggest hits with the original French version; and she sang it on the Ed Sullivan Show. The song was adapted in 1954 by American songwriter Jack Lawrence, who wrote English lyrics that are considerably different from the original French ones. The English language title arises in part from a misinterpretation of the French title, as pauvre Jean was taken for the same-sounding pauvres gens, which translates as poor people..Lawrence's lyrics, which pronounce Paris as PaREE in the French style, are seldom heard, as most of the popular recordings of the song in the English-speaking world have been instrumentals.

Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1391232 By Christopher Alexander. By George Gershwin. Arranged by Christopher Alexander. Broadway,Jazz,Musical/Show,Standards,Traditional. Score and individual part. 12 pages. Christopher Alexander #974764. Published by Christopher Alexander (A0.1391232). Perhaps now the most famous ballad of George and Ira Gershwin, this popular song was originally written in 1926 as an upbeat jazz, rhythmic tune first performed by Gertrude Lawrence in the musical Oh, Kay!. After the musical closed, the standout song became interepreted in many different fashions, including the slower-tempo torch song that has now becomes its standard. Typical of George Gershwin’s melodies, each phrase easily connects to the next and vividly illustrates the emotional journey to create a moving musical message for audiences to enjoy.Someone to Watch Over Me is included in the collection:Songs Without Words: Ten Popular Songs Arranged for Solo Instrument with Piano Accompaniment
