Flash Flood is an original composition for jazz piano that features upbeat swing and afro-cuban rhythms with modal jazz harmonies.  Reminiscent of the styles of McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea.  Bombastic and fever-pitched, yet playable for an intermediate-level pianist.  

Includes chord symbols for improvising or playing with an ensemble.  The form for solos is AABA.  The second ending on the last page is used only as an ending.

The Humoresque Op. 75 - composed in 1994 - is considered one of the most difficult pieces by Kapustin. Presented in the standard jazz form, the variations sound like improvisations, influenced by McCoy Tyner's style, but are minutely through-composed.

This fast, boisterous piece for piano (app. 1 min. 20 sec.) utilizes drum rudiments (the para-diddle) that should be very familiar to any snare-drum student.  The highly dissonant and chromatic A-section is followed by a contrasting modal B-section that echoes sounds of jazz pianists McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea.  
Performers should take care to exaggerate accents throughout.  Otherwise, the larger pulse gets obscured and the effect is lost.  Also pay attention to suggested fingerings for the LH at the end of the B-section.  This composition would be a good fit for advanced intermediate students who are tired of playing pretty and would like to make some musical noise.

Yes, they are modeled loosely after Chopin's—aesthetically, not stylistically. They draw heavily on jazz and blues, from Ellington and Monk to Randy Weston and McCoy Tyner.
