Written June 16, 2024, this is an original piano arrangement of the song by Billy Dean, “Somewhere in My Broken Heart” (originally released by Randy Travis and later as a single by Dean). Interestingly, the year before this song was released in 1990, Billy Dean called me and ask about my considering playing piano for him on tour in his band. He was one of the most kind and gracious people I have ever spoken to. At the time I wasn’t as familiar with his music, but after speaking with him I found out he had the number one country video in the country and the next year he released this song which was the CMA Song of the Year. It is a great song I’ve always loved and always wanted to play, so this week I did. BTW, the reason I didn’t was because I was working in a church and wouldn’t be free to travel. Looking back I wish I had. Hope you enjoy it.

Two Sides to Every Story is an original composition that was written for Wheaton College. The piece is based off of the idea that two different individuals are talking about the same experience, but from their own perspective. There is a lot of unique melodic and harmonic colors that are implemented into the piece. Throughout the process of writing this piece, I learned to not be afraid of risks and to explore new types of colors that I am less comfortable with. About this song:
One of my students loves a song of mine, titled, Holy Moly Wow Wow Wow. She told me that I should write another song called, Oh! My Gosh or Oh! My God. I said I would think about it. Later, I felt as if it was strange to have God's name in the title, so this is the reason why I changed the title to Oh! My Goodness.

This is a light, lively song. It is especially for the teen.

From ms. 1 to 4, both hands are following the syllables of Oh! My Good-ness with the triads going down from A to G to F and E. The triad movement makes a sound of surprise like a scream.
Watch for the coordination between the two hands on ms. 10, 14, 18,
In ms. 28 and 29, the same two measures appear again with different fingering.
The tempo control on this song is very important. Make sure not to drag or speed up in the middle of the song.

Latté On My Carpé for Late Intermediate Level

This is a Storyteller Piano Solo.
Storyteller songs normally use the sound to describe an action or tell a story. They sometimes use sound to describe a feeling or a sound.

Carpé is a made-up word for Carpet. A piano teacher posted a thread on Facebook in November 2013. She mentioned that one of her student’s parents spilled coffee on her white carpet while she was giving piano lessons. I thought this might be a good subject to write about because I spill coffee all the time. One time, I spilled a pot of chicken soup in my car……. A friend of mine spilled a crock pot of chili in her car transporting it to a graduation party.

There are two versions of this work; the original (1996) is for guitar. They are the same, more or less, though this arrangement for piano (2023) is, in my opinion, better. These are five sketches, not in the sense of pencil drawings, but of musical reminiscences “from days of youth� (as Grieg would have said), of Cape Cod memories, inspired by picturesque and somewhat salty scenes.
